The story of the navel orange is fascinating.

I can see orange trees from my window, and there are still many groves here in Redlands. I've driven through the groves in Riverside when they are in bloom -- so fragrant. But, I did not know this history. The original trees I think are still here as a historic site not far from where my daughter works, so I'll have to make a visit there. I don't think I've seen the lemon grove, but have been to the city of Lemon Grove, California! My daughter and many of her neighbors have lemon trees.
Hi Larry! Great job with the Forward. The only thing I noted is that in the intro you state "Forward" but in the outro you state "End of Preface". Should those match? If it's not a big deal, then this can be ignored :)
Cheers,
Claire

Hello! Very nicely read, however I do have a few areas that need to be addressed please. Once you have made the corrections, please be sure to re-upload the corrected file (under the same file name) and post the link back in this thread so I can double check those few areas mentioned below. I've listed the edit times from the end of the reading back to the beginning. If edits are completed in this order (end to beginning), there shouldn't be any issues with the timing within the recording that I've noted.
  • From 6:10 through the end - as Larry mentioned, there is a definite bump in audio volume starting from "brought the new territory into great importance....." If possible, select that section of audio and adjust the volume so it's in line with the rest of your recording.
  • Around 4:04-4:06 - audible clacking background noise during "...over the Bear-flag Republic"
  • Around 3:26-3:27 - audible clacking background noise during "A party of Fremont's men rode down to Sonoma"
  • Around 2:57 - heard "As Cattro had more men..." should be "As Castro had more men"
  • Around 2:08 - heard "The United States had won California for a long time"...should be "The United States had wanted California for a long time"
  • Around 1:31 - slight stumble with "All kept talking" (between kept and talking)
Cheers,
Claire

Sections 11 and 12 are both PL OK! It was very interesting how they basically used one tree trunk to create more navel orange trees! I was wondering what the process was since they were seedless.

Cbteddy wrote: December 27th, 2023, 7:13 pm You have a very nice cadence in your reading. And, today I learned the Californian Condor has been close to extinction for a very long time. I looked into it, and it's still around today, but there are estimated to be less than 600. Eek!
Thank you, Claire. I'm still a relative newbie and appreciate the feedback.

In fact, I made the exact (!) same comment to my husband after reading chapter 15 ... that condors have apparently been teetering on the edge of extinction for "a-very-long-time." In my further research, I discovered that by 1987 there were so few (as a result of human behaviors in the form of poaching and several types of poisoning) that all 27 condors left in the world were captured and kept in breeding facilities at the L. A. Zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park. Through captive breeding and release programs, by Aug 2023 there were a total of 559 condors recorded, of which 345 live and breed in the wild. Though impressively large, they are not the most beautiful bird (to my eye, anyway), but as large scavengers they play an important part in the maintenance of the areas they serve.

Ch 21 to follow.
