All of the plays that would eventually make his name as a dramatist were rejected by the managers of the major theatres of London. Ill with consumption, Tobin heard that his last play, “The Honeymoon” had been accepted by the manager of Drury Lane. Unfortunately, the playwright expired before the production reached the stage. This script, heavily influenced by popular fairy tales and Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” was a favorite of theater-goers throughout the 19th century. (Summary by Kelly Taylor)
