Lo! Chapter III, The Calabash Man.

Thanks, Keith! this is loaded into the MW and queued for proofing.

Hey, when we post the link for our submission here in LibriVox, we also include the length of the file after the link, such as this: (21:32)

I already noted your file's time, though, so no worries until you put up your next recording. :)

Keith, it's marvelous! (You seemed to have so much fun with it, too - would you care to pick up the other empty slots on the table, to make this a trio work? If that's not floating your boat, no worries, we'll let them wait for others who want to pick them up.) :)

There is one thing that needs to be fixed per LibriVox parameters - Can you please snip out the extra silence from the beginning, so that it is only 1 second long? It is currently 5 seconds. And then, paste that onto the end so that the silence there will be 5 seconds instead of only 2.

I also wanted to let you know about Noise Reduction.

This recording gets flagged by Checker for moderate background noise, but it is super easy to take care of that. In Audacity, "Noise Reduction" is my most favorite editing tool!

It is a two-step process. It is great at cleaning out background noise so your recording is clean and clear, but you do need to watch out how strongly you apply it, because if you do it too much, it will distort your recording so that it starts sounding tinny, with Darth Vader breathing, and even like space monkeys are invading your reading.

Open your recording file, and then:
  • Zoom the track bigger so you can easily highlight the ending silence period. (Just click and drag your mouse across that stretch.)
  • In the Effects Menu, select "Noise Reduction"
  • Click on "Get Noise Profile" (the pop-up window will disappear)
  • Now click Control-A to highlight the entire track.
  • Re-open the Noise Reduction effect and for now use these numbers:
    Noise Reduction: 12
    Sensitivity: 6
    Frequency smoothing: 3
  • Click OK
Then you're ready to re-export to mp3 and upload the file the same way you did the first time. (keep the mp3 file name the same) :)

1. Yes. put me down for the other Tales that are as-yet unassigned.
2. I'm puzzled because I did run this through Checker and did not see a noise flag. (Are there multiple versions of checker at large?) I will do the noise reduction. May I try it in Goldwave, which is my long-time editor of choice? Goldwave offers what looks like the same noise reduction filter, which works basically the same way. After I re-upload it, you can tell me if the result is Good Enough.
3. And I will do the cut and paste with the lead/tail silence and resubmit. Sorry, I was way too sloppy with that detail. I will learn and do better!

now, there's a word full of shudders

Thanks for fixing the ends, and the noise reduction worked great - certainly use whatever editing platform you like best! Calabash Man is PL OK

You can toggle "Background Noise" on in Checker from the drop-down Menu "Validation" > Choose Validation Methods.

Chapter 6, The Magic Ball 18:39

(not the Magic "Bull" -- a typo in the Magic Window ...)

"The Hero Twins" is PL OK

Another gorgeous reading.

(Hey, Mark, you wouldn't feel like PL'ing my section 1, would you? There's zero rush on that, as I'm on a much slower recording schedule than you gents are.)
