When the Birds Fly South, by Stanton A. Coblentz (1896 - 1982)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page:https://librivox.org/when-the-birds-fly-south-by-stanton-a-coblentz/

Volunteers outside the USA: Stanton A. Coblentz died in 1982. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 70 years for authors who died after 1971; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.

Dan Prescott, an American adventurer, discovers the hidden valley of Sobul in a mountainous region of Afghanistan, inhabited by a strange race of winged people known as the "Ibandru". He falls in love with one of them, Yasma, and they marry in a scene of general celebration. When fall comes, however, the Ibandru abandon their valley to fly south with the birds for the winter, taking Yasma with them. The importance of Stanley Coblentz's lost world fantasy was confirmed by its reprinting as the 23rd volume in the prestigious Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy series in 1980. IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Chapter 1 is PL OK. I hadn't realised I'd missed fantasy, but yes, this is off to a good start!

Are you on a slightly different setup for this project? I'm not sure if it's my ears or your mic...

Chapter 2 ready for PL!

A different set up, I'm not sure, because the last few months were a bit disruptive in terms of recording. I'm not sure where I recorded Mr Moffatt now, but this one must be the first recording I've done in the new apartment.

A note, or a point to check for chapters 1 and 2 with the intro (I'm really sorry I missed it in 1!): I heard his name as Stanley – is it pronounced as Stanley or Stanton? I haven’t read anything about how he said it and I think in my head when I read it in print I assumed it wouldn't be pronounced as 'Stanley'. Any ideas?

I don't think the setup is wildly different, but even any minor differences are probably only audible because I'm listening on headphones. I know we get zero feedback, but I'm going to stick my neck out and say that maybe most listeners don't do that!

My mistake! It should be Stanton A. Coblentz. I've corrected and marked both as ready for spot PL.

Chapters 1 and 2 are spot PL OK. I don't think I recall anybody else named Stanton off the top of my head, so I can see why Stanley seemed a natural substitute.

Points for your consideration for chapter 3:

4.05 – slight something or other left in when editing?

9.49-9.53
...the feminine apparel differing from the masculine...

Chapter 3 ready for spot PL! Chapter 4 ready for PL!

I hope I've got 'apparel' right this time. It's come up before and I can't quite hear how the dictionary version is different from what I am saying. It is the stress pattern, is that right?

3 and 4 are PL OK.

With apparel, at least according to my (very human, possibly faulty) ears, it's the middle syllable. I think the free Collins audio clip stresses the middle syllable, and I think I heard that middle syllable as a very slightly different vowel sound. What this is proving to me once again is that there is nothing like recording to make you question even the most basic of words you thought you knew, in your native tongue, no less!

Don't fret too much as long as it is understandable - I've been listening to a highly trained reader who told me "she quickly pulled her shoes over her rubbers"
