Makeshifts & Realities, by Gertrude Robins (1880 - 1917)
First performed in 1908, Makeshifts and Realities follow the sisters Caroline and Dolly Parker as they find themselves living a financially precarious existence in their late 20s and early 30s. With limited choices available, what will they make of their work – or possible suitors?

NB This double bill contains a scene with an assault. (Summary by Newgatenovelist)

All here :D . Erin - we need a name in the DPL spot just to stop us appearing on PL wanted lists and wasting other volunteers time - shall I put you?

Yes, I'll be the DPL and I'll be doing the editing as well.

I *didn't* use a tilde in the subject line at launch to signal that a DPL was required. Is that what you mean?

You didn't make a mistake - there is a "handmade" project status table that shows amongst other things whether an active project has a DPL - and people sometimes also just look at the MW to see if there is a DPL
If you are curious https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Project_Status_Table

My parts for 'Realities', ready for PL!

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/realities_thompson_1_phil.mp3 - 06:32
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/realities_smythe_1_phil.mp3 - 11:13

Just to check, I've pronounced 'Smythe' to rhyme with 'Blithe', not as 'Smith'. Correct? You'd think that wouldn't be an issue for my recordings, but Mr Smythe does like to say his own name out loud.

Here is narration for Makeshifts
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/makeshiftsrealities_narrator_1.mp3
I have put in page numbers to help you find things more easily.
Have also put in character names in some places in case they're useful in attributing actions. They can readily be cut out in editing if not wanted.
See if it's OK.

And my parts for Makeshifts. Mr. Smythe really is an unpleasant chap!

At the beginning they talk about ordering half a ton of coal. I'm just about old enough to remember the family ordering coal, but half a ton sounds like an awful lot! Where did they put it?

Peter: Thank you so much, this is splendid. I *always* find it easier to jettison extra material than go back for something wanting, and I appreciate the markers.

Intro – First of all, I forgot to amend the first post, so you read what was there. In the intro, that included ‘Act One’. Makeshifts and Realities are both one-act plays that work well performed in sequence but can also be done separately, so I would like to cut the ‘Act One’. I don’t know which way you’d prefer. I’m quite willing to edit the existing file so you don’t have to do anything else (especially as I didn’t make that very clear), but if you want creative control of your own files then I fully understand.

2.55, bottom third p 10, omission

[A direction for Dolly] Still reading.

Outro – Please change to End of Makeshifts (sorry!)

In the second file, could you please add your own voice credit (Stage directions read by Peter)? I know you tend not to include it in your prose solos but I believe it’s LV custom to include it in dramas, and I think it’s usually done with each reader doing their own credit rather than a cast list read by a single voice.

He's awful! And I think in the first play you've done well with him, if I can say that without it sounding highly unflattering.

Makeshifts, Mr. Thompson is PL OK.

For Makeshifts, Mr. Smythe:

Minor point I can handle if need be: with the voice credit, it’s as I said for Peter – the standard LV process is for each reader to record their own (e.g., Mr Smythe, read by Phil) rather than one reader who does the whole cast list. I can take your name from the lines for Mr Thompson if you don’t want to re-record. Either way is fine.

5.18, bottom half p 15, omission
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015027986366&seq=19
Go on … Same again … [Ditto repeato]

And yes, I had in mind that Smythe's name rhymes with blithe. I just didn't put it in the first post. Every time I think I've prepped something, there's usually something else staring me in the face that I forgot!

I have absolutely no idea where they stored the coal. Mr. Thompson fetches stout out of the cellar at one point, so maybe down there? I'm assuming that it was a house taken in better days, presumably when the father was around and earning an income, and is consequently a bit bigger than a really cramped home. Maybe there's storage that comes with that, in the cellar or outside. I'm guessing!

Anne, I have seen something I'd like to check sooner rather than later. I think this author might have got confused with another author with a very similar name. I would have sworn I entered her dates in correctly, but maybe not! This Gertrude Robins was 1880-1917 and she doesn’t have a wiki page. If you need a quick bio to add to the catalogue, maybe:
Gertrude Robins was a playwright who wrote comic and dramatic works.
Or whatever else works for you! I think she’s been kind of swallowed up by Gertrude Minnie Robins (1861-1939), who was a novelist who published under the name of Mrs. Baillie Reynolds. I know it’s trickier to verify someone who’s not on wiki, but there’s visual evidence as well. The author portrait in this volume:
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015027986366&seq=8
also shows she looks quite different to the photos on the wiki page of Gertrude Minnie Robins:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrude_Minnie_Robins
Does this make sense or have I confused matters?
