vivacious wrote: February 11th, 2024, 5:46 am Hi there! I'm a huge Western fan and would love to record "Fremont calls again." I'm a newbie to Librivox, so please let me know any steps I'll need to take for my first recording! I've already set up and configured my microphone and Audacity and posted my 1 minute test. Thanks!
That's great!
I would be thrilled to have you read for us in this project.
I do need to know exactly how you would like to be listed in the LibriVox catalog. This can be your real name, pseudonym, or any nickname/handle you wish. This is how you will be credited for all of your LV work.
Hi there! I'd like to be listed as Tracy Angela please. :)
That's great!
I've added you to the LibriVox catalog and assigned you Section 10.
Just click on your name in the Magic Window to view your personal reader page. This is where you can track all of your LV projects of which I hope there will be many.

WELCOME TO LIBRIVOX

Welcome to Librivox, Macklin! You are a very good reader - a pleasure to PL.

The only comment I have about this chapter is that when run through the Checker it indicates that the volume falls outside of target range. I'll let our admin advise you about that.

Otherwise? Terrific!

Thanks, Betsy!
There are actually several issues that need to be addressed. I hope you are checking for these.

First, the volume is too loud, coming in at 93.2 decibels. The LV target is 89 dBs with an acceptable range of 86-92 dBs. Highlight the entire track, then you can go to the Effects menu in Audacity and select Volume and Compression, then select Amplification. Set the Amplification (dB) value to -4.2 and click Apply. That should put you right on 89.

I do see that there is already a fair amount of clipping, which suggests to me that you are overdriving the volume. Try adjusting the input gain so that your raw recording is closer to the target volume. You can use our LV specific program, Checker, to check the volume in decibels (Audacity doesn't have this function, oddly enough) as well as other LV specs.

Checker https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker, written specifically for LibriVox. Just drag a file into the Checker window to check validation on all LV specs, including a readout of actual volume in decibels. Use the Amplification feature in Audacity to bring the volume closer to the LV target of 89 dB.

Second, the beginning and ending silences are both a bit long. At the beginning, we need between 0.5-1.0 second, and you have about 1.5. At the end we like to see about 5 seconds, and I see closer to 6.

Third, the attribution, "Read by . . . ." should appear EITHER at the beginning OR the end, but not both. So, please eliminate one of the voice credits.

Just upload your corrected file under the same name, then post the link and new file length here again and we'll give it a quick check.

These are jus the little details that will become second nature to you after awhile.
Your actual reading is quite excellent, so I look forward to hearing a lot more of your voice here on LibriVox.

Hi -

Thanks for this feedback. I appreciate that you so carefully described the steps for the volume adjustment.

Having read your note I've re-listened to the start and finish again, three times. I'm not getting the length of silence that you get. For me the beginning silence is exactly 1 second and the end is exactly 5 seconds. Odd that it should be different between your system and mine. :hmm:

I did overlook the mentioning of his name both times - apologies on that score.

Thanks for the feedback! Next time I'll turn the gain down on my initial recording.

Off-topic: I'm also practicing satisfying ACX Check. Now that I've reduced it 4.2 dB, my ACX Check says my Peak Level is too quiet while the other two pass (RMS level and Noise Floor). I normalized the peak level to -3.0dB, and it says it passes for all three. Is that my best move? Use "Amplify" to adjust overall then "Normalize" to raise the peaks?

Thanks!

Here's the revised recording. Let me know if I need to adjust anything else.

Chapter 17: "Scant Christmas Comfort" - 13:53.

May I read Chapter 18 - "Forcing the Snowy Sierras" (so long as my last chapter is sufficiently revised)?

Thanks!

Very good on all of the adjustments!
I am really not the one to advise you on the ACX specs, but your approach sounds reasonable. I know it's a bit confusing that LV uses a different system from what seems to be industry standard, but I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'm glad to assign you Section 18. :D
