Hello Mark san,

You can convert the file from Stereo into Mono in Audacity.
1) Open the file by Audacity.

2) Go to Track, Select 'From Stereo to Mono'

3) Save the converted file.

Just a question. Which OS are you using? Do you use Linux?

ID3 tag is an enigma. At least to me.

Cheers,
Masa

Hello, Masa san,
Thank you for the tip, I'll get to the bottom of this, just need to find time...
Yes, I do use Linux, but I don't know much about it. My sons installed and maintain the PCs in my house, and I often have to ask them for help.

ID3 tags are explained in the LV wiki, that's what I used to enter them...

Hello Mark san,

Thank you for your message.
karlkuzmich wrote: Yes, I do use Linux, but I don't know much about it.
I also use Linux. So I can see your ID3 tags. But I'm afraid Windows & Mac users can't see your ID3 tags.
Audacity on Linux uses Id3 version 2.4, while Windows & Mac uses version 2.3.
So Linux users use another software to add ID3 tags.

So, Masa san, do you have any suggestions for me? Where do I go from here if I cannot record proper metadata? Can you help?

Thanks,

Please look at here
http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/How_to_Add_or_Edit_ID3_Tags#Ubuntu
Audacity for Ubuntu automatically generates ID3v2.4 tags which often are not visible in other applications in other operating systems. Librox uses ID3v2.3 tags. A single command in the terminal window can convert your ID3v2.4 tags to ID3v2.3 tags.

A program called eyeD3 is available through the Synaptic Package Manager. To install it go to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. Enter your password when asked for it. In the search box type eyeD3. Click the box to the left of the program and mark for installation when prompted. Click the "Apply" button. If it suggests other dependent packages accept their installation also.
Anyway as a first step, please upload a file in Mono.

Cheers,
Masa

Hello Mark san,

Thank you for your recording.
Mono & ID3 tags are OK.

Now you need to fix the following 2 items.
1) Volume
It's a bit low.
$ mp3gain msw006_propavshayakaloshadobblsa_averchenko_kk.mp3
msw006_propavshayakaloshadobblsa_averchenko_kk.mp3
Recommended "Track" dB change: 5.580000
Recommended "Track" mp3 gain change: 4
WARNING: some clipping may occur with this gain change!
Max PCM sample at current gain: 19242.582016
Max mp3 global gain field: 174
Min mp3 global gain field: 125

Recommended "Album" dB change for all files: 5.580000
Recommended "Album" mp3 gain change for all files: 4
WARNING: with this global gain change, some clipping may occur in file msw006_propavshayakaloshadobblsa_averchenko_kk.mp3
This means your volume is 83.5 dB. (89 - 5.5). You need to amplify 5.5 dB.
You can do this using Audacity.

2) 5 second silent time
You see the following at the first post.
At the End say: "End of section. This recording is in the public domain"; then leave 5 seconds of silence (or 10 seconds if the file is longer than 30 minutes).
I'm just checking technical staff. Contents are checked by a proof listener.

Hello Masa san,

Fixed the volume, appended 5 sec silence, and changed the file name (appended my full userid).
Can I see all the diagnostic myself? I'd rather see and fix the problems myself if I see them...

Hi Karl,
You can use the checker to check out those technical aspects of your files - see: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker

Hello Anna san,

I need your help.
Can you check ID3 tags of Mark san's recording?
Do you think is it OK?
It is ID3 2.4 version. But Checker doesn't complain.
I tried Audacity on Windows7. I can read the ID3 tags.
This is the reason why I OKed his ID 3 tag.
But according to my understanding LibriVox accepts 2.3 version.

Mark san,
karlkuzmich wrote:Fixed the volume, appended 5 sec silence, and changed the file name (appended my full userid).
1) Volume is OK.
2) 5 sec silence is OK. But you should record 5 sec in silence. This silence time is used for noise cleaning. The explanation is as follows.
http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Noisecleaning_With_Pics
3) You need to use initials instead of full userid.
Save as mp3 file
File name all in lowercase: msw006_[work's title]_[author's last name]_[your initials].mp3
(e.g. msw006_chunsi_wang_drb.mp3)
Please use Checker.
It detects bit rate is wrong.

Masa

The ID3 tags show up fine for me, so they are probably already alright. Also, at the cataloguing stage, the files go through another check, and we'll make sure it's OK then. But I think it is fine as it is at the moment.
Thanks, Masa.
Anna

PS I don't know any Russian, but your voice and story-telling sound good, Karl!

Hello Arnie san,

Thank you for your recording.
Latin recording makes this project attractive.
I suppose lots of people learned Latin.

Can you just adjust the volume?
When I measure your recording using checker, it shows 96.5 dB.
We aim at 89.0 dB.
Other technical things are OK.

Masa

Thanks for the feedback. I've used MP3Gain to normalize. It is now at 89.0 db according to checker.

Hope this work was not too short. Its been a few years since I've read Latin out loud. I remember most of my pronunciation though. If there is an expert in Latin here at LibriVox, perhaps they might want PL or check my pronunciation. I tend to pronounce my Latin with a slight Spanish accent though of course it is not known exactly what the Roman accent sounded like.
