But nowadays I'm mostly listening to things like:
Maurice Ravel: String Quartet in F minor
The Mekons: Dancing In The Head
- find it here: http://www.epitonic.com/index.jsp?refer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.epitonic.com%2Fartists%2Fmekons.html
The Pinetop Seven: On The Last Ride In -see http://www.pinetopseven.com/discs.html
A few tunes downloaded from Radio Free Abattoir
Shostakovich: Sonata For Cello & Piano, Op. 40: II-Allegro
Nine Inch Nails: miscellaneous numbers.
Laurie Anderson: her "Big Science" album

I like virtually every female singer I've heard with a few exceptions, like Ethel Merman, Yoko Ono, and anyone else who sounds like some kind of mechanical object breaking down.

Essentials:
Billie Holiday
Joni Mitchell
Aretha Franklin
Patti Smith
Tracey Thorn
Chrissie Hynde
Sinead O'Connor
Erykah Badu
Sandy Denny
Fiona Apple
Annie Lennox
Anita O'Day
Pink
Ella Fitzgerald
Patsy Cline
Dolly Parton
Janis Joplin
Maria Callas
Judy Garland....

I like considerably fewer male singers, but I go for quality over quantity:
Sinatra
Joe Williams
Rufus Wainwright
Bono
Michael Stipe
Ian McCulloch
David Sylvian
James Taylor
Luther Vandross
John Doe
Martin Sexton
Eddie Vedder
Placido Domingo
Mick Jagger

Most recent artist I've gotten into: Iron & Wine

Robinel, are those songs out of copyright..? I feel a bit funny about the forum linking to them if they're not.

I have the same question as Cori, robinel. What's the licensing status of the songs you've linked?

I downloaded a couple of the MP3s for songs which I happen to own (the Ghost in the Shell OSTs) ... to be clear, they are samples, not the entire song.

robinel, thanks for your PM, as I hadn't downloaded any files and didn't know they weren't the full recording. However, and this is just my opinion, it might still be better to link to the artist's websites or to official sites with clips licenced. Record labels are astonishingly touchy about samples of music being used just about anywhere that isn't directly making money for them.

Also, again just my perspective, but this is a particularly sensitive area for LibriVox generally, since we ARE creating sound files of our own which in some cases will compete with commercially-available recordings. We work ENTIRELY in the public domain and we try very hard to stay completely and plainly legal. I appreciate you wanting to share some very beautiful voices, but really would be more comfortable with you linking indirectly (via the venues you mentioned in your PM / above.)

Wow, some really, really good music listed here - you guys have good taste. We're listening to Josh Groban at the moment - enough different folks in our house that what's playing can be anything from soup to nuts.

Since I'm a music fan, I hereby make an attempt at resurrecting this thread :)

My musical preferences are quite well summarised HERE Incidentally, does anyone of you have a last.fm account? It's the only social network I have stuck to since the day when I registered there in the early 2007. Very useful when you want to find new artists similar to the ones you alreeady like.
