When AmethystA was looking for her favorite Ben King poem and PG didn't have it, I got myself a copy of Ben King's Verse from abebooks. I just submitted it for PG's copyright clearance, and once I get the OK from them, I'll scan it for Distributed Proofreaders soon.

Wanted to let you know! :D

I'm new (this is my first one), so I hope I did everything right, but here it is:

There Will Come Soft Rains, by Sara Teasdale

Link to the poem: http://www.bartleby.com/271/4.html

Link to my recording: http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=23FZCQAHQ479X2W8FYQQ98SYLV

I hope it's OK!

Welcome to LibriVox, Larisa. Great job with your first recording!

The volume was rather quiet but it will be amplified in the cataloging process. However, if you could check the input volume for your microphone before your next recording, that would be helpful.

Also, something for next time, for very short recordings like poems, we use the abbreviated disclaimer so that there isn't too much introduction before we get to the poem. The abbreviated disclaimer for this would be something like: "There Will Come Soft Rain, by Sara Teasdale, read for librivox.org by Larisa......[text of poem]......end of poem, this recording is in the public domain." Don't worry about it for this poem, but if you could do that next time that would be great!

One last thing - How do you want your name to appear on the catalog page? Do you have a URL you'd like your name to link to?

Thanks again for submitting a lovely recording and let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing you again!

Hi Annie,

Thanks for the response; I'll adjust the microphone levels accordingly. You can credit me as "Larisa Migachyov", and I don't really have a URL to link to, alas.

I'll be recording more (after turning up the volume on my microphone); this is fun!

Here's another one:

The Microbe, by Hilaire Belloc

Link to poem: http://www.theotherpages.org/poems/belloc01.html#14
Link to my recording thereof: http://download.yousendit.com/1E0ADA1907EE5AE6

Hope the sound levels are better in this one; I did something to them, but I'm not sure how much it helped.

Hmm, the sound level is about the same. What is your recording set up like? Mac or Windows? Audacity or GarageBand or other? What kind of mic do you use? It's way past my bedtime but we'll get this figured out!

Oh, and the poem sounds wonderful!

Annie,
Here is a better file of both The Flower's Ball and The Daffodils. I re-recorded them with my new USB headphone/microphone combo. I think they sound better-both louder and clearer. Let me know if you think so, too. Thanks!

Mary

Hi Annie,

I'm using a Logitech microphone with a USB connector, and Audacity on a Windows XP system. I've turned the volume up to maximum in every place I could think of; is there a setting on Audacity that I'm missing? I thought I set the volume to maximum there, too, but is there another setting there that I should know about?

Thanks!

Just wondering.
Have you turned up the volume in Windows?
There's a symbol looks like a speaker in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
Right click on it.
Left click on 'adjust audio properties'
Click on audio tab
Halfway down the page it mentions sound recording and it should mention your logitech microphone.
Select volume in that section and adjust according. I have mine about two thirds the way up.

Hmm, I did all that and it still sounds the same. Is there a way to turn the volume up later, in post-processing? I really don't want to have to shout into this thing - it would sound awful. :)

Anyhow, here are two more by Sara Teasdale:
"Winter Stars":
http://www.allspirit.co.uk/teasdale.html#winter (text)
http://s39.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0CDFMNB1X10U73LM7DSYL3IIO9 (sound)

and "Let it Be Forgotten":

http://www.bonniehamre.com/Personal/Sara.htm (it's on there somewhere...)
http://download.yousendit.com/01A48D4F7C58CC28 (sound)

Hope these are OK; I'm sorry about the sound levels.

Larisa (getting quite addicted to this...gotta stop before I record the Complete Works of Sara Teasdale...)

Oh, incidentally, does Swinburne's "The Garden of Proserpine" qualify as a "short poem"? It's not that short. :)
