I can de-amplify the section in Audacity, but what software are you using to determine the decible level? Does Audacity have a plug-in that will allow me to check the level?
I'm not sure if this is what Dolly is using, but we have our very own LibriVox Checker software that you can use. Here's the thread that explains how to download and use it: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=36489

Thanks, John. I downloaded Checker, but I'm confused about the decible level. I loaded The Piazza and checked it, but the closest thing I can find is something called an RMS Amplitude number which reads -21 db (8.96%). Where's the decible level number in all this?

Hmmm...that's odd. Here's what I see when I check your file with the Checker:

Is that interface at all similar to the one you see?

The older version (not the experimental version) doesn't have the volume. You need to download the experimental version to get the volume. http://cgjennings.ca/checker/ (Sorry for interfering!)

PL-OK!

The decibel level was a smidge loud. I'm reading 92.8 and Librivox likes it around 89.

Any chance of de-amplifying by 2 or 3?

thanks!!!
neat story, I haven't read much Melville. :)

Dolly
Alrighty then! Now that I've got the Checker software, I'm going through recent uploads and reducing the decible level a little. Here's a re-upload of The Piazza: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/gu/shortstory053_piazza_jkw.mp3

Both of these sections have been re-uploaded with volumes adjusted appropriately.

I use MP Gain mp3gain.sourceforge.net/ for the decibel check. Quick an Dirty. and, it probably read the 92.7 (not 92.8) because I checked on my laptop at home, but posted the note when I got to work... (sorry, my bad! memory lapse after the drive )

thanks!
