I'm just lurking on this thread, having read an earlier chapter or two, but here are my two bits:

There are two kinds of items in parentheses. One kind refers to figures and tables in the book - which are not accessible to LISTENERS - so I would leave them out. The other kind add additional meaning to the text just stated, so I wold read those.

For example, on page 330 parenthetic comments are:

(hyperphalangy) - WOULD READ
(hyperdactyly) - WOULD READ
(see Fig. 19,C) - WOULD NOT READ
(Anlagen) - WOULD READ (a German term)
(Megaplera, the humpback whale) - WOULD READ
