The Frontier in American History by Frederick Jackson Turner (1861 - 1932).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalogue page: https://librivox.org/the-frontier-in-american-history-by-frederick-jackson-turner/

abandoned solo adopted by ColleenMc
Frederick Jackson Turner was an extremely influential U.S. historian, who is best known for his "frontier thesis", which proposed that American democracy was profoundly shaped by the existence of an undeveloped frontier area from the founding through the 1880s. He originally put forth his idea in the essay "The Significance of the Frontier in American History", published just three years after the frontier was "officially closed" in 1890. He continued to elaborate on the frontier thesis as well as the influence of sectionalism, and the unique contributions of the Midwest to American democracy. His theory and other writings are still debated by modern day historians. This work, The Frontier in American History, collects a number of Turner's essays and speeches, including "The Significance of the Frontier in American History."
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/22994
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

ok, here we go :)

i threw out your summary, it was not pd. you dont have to write a new one right away, just at one point before cataloging i would be happy if you could put a few sentences together :)

i see this is your first solo  i will send you a pm with instructions and how to enter the magic window in a moment. please let me know if anything doesnt work out or if something is unclear.

and we need a dpl!

Hi Carolin - thank you so much for helping me along! :D

With regards to the summary - so sorry about that. I got a little confused as to where it all had to come from. I'm aware of what the book is mostly about but I'd feel more comfortable filling that bit in when I've done a couple of sections, just so I have a better feel of how to do that justice.

Yes, we absolutely need a DPL - how do we find one? (I feel like such a noob)

:)

everyone feels like a n00b during their first solo :)

waiting a bit before you come up with a summary is fine, you can wait with writing it until you submit the last section. i see you filled in the magic window, and you did it perfectly!

and about trying to catch a dpl, id say we hang out in the launch pad a little longer because a lot of our regular dpls come by here every so often and look at new projects that might interest them. there is always a chance that someone will volunteer. if nobody comes forward by the time you uploaded a section or two, we can advertise at listeners wanted and draw the attention of all those who didnt look in the launch pad :) nothing to worry about, really, im sure it wont take us long to find someone who will be interested in this project.

Sounds good. I'll have a couple up this weekend, hopefully.

Is there something specific I need to do with regard to ID3 tags, or should I just leave them?

the id3 tags are filled in automatically at cataloging under the new system, so you can leave them blank :)

Hi Josh,

A wonderful reading and section 1 is PL OK. This falls out of the range of standard listening but since I'm from near the area talked about in this section "Alleghanies" caught my attention. It's pronounced the same as the link below if you wish to make a change.

http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=alleghanies&submit=Submit

I think this will quite an interesting listen. Thanks for having me along. :D

Thanks Laura!

I've done a search and there are really only five instances of the word in this section, so I don't think I'll go back and change it - but I certainly won't make that mistake again.
