Hagar's Daughter: A Story of Southern Caste Prejudice by Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins (1859 - 1930).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/hagars-daughter-by-pauline-elizabeth-hopkins/

Hagar's Daughter was first published serially in "The Colored American Magazine" in 1901-1902 by Pauline E. Hopkins, a prominent African-American novelist, journalist, historian, and playwright. The book was described as "a powerful narrative of love and intrigue, founded on events which happened in the exciting times immediately following the assassination of President Lincoln: a story of the Republic in the power of Southern caste prejudice toward the Negro." (From the January, 1901, issue of "The Colored American Magazine")

In another of her works, the author explained the nature and purpose of her literary efforts: "But, after all, it is the simple, homely tale, unassumingly told, which cements the bond of brotherhood among all classes and all complexions. Fiction is of great value to any people as a preserver of manners and customs—religious, political and social. It is a record of growth and development from generation to generation. No one will do this for us; we must ourselves develop the men and women who will faithfully portray the inmost thoughts and feelings of the Negro with all the fire and romance which lie dormant in our history, and, as yet, unrecognized by writers of the Anglo-Saxon race." (From the Preface, Contending Forces, 1900) (Summary by lubee930)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/hopkins/hagar/hagar.html
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

To my prospective MC:

I think that I will DPL this project myself, please. Also, Pauline Hopkins sometimes used the pseudonym Sarah A. Allen, but I wasn't sure if I was supposed to indicate this in the template in some way--? :hmm: Anyway, if I need to make any changes, let me know. Thanks! :)

Hi Lucretia. I was the original MC on this project so I'd be happy to MC again. Did you plan to use the existing files?

I think that it would be nice to use them if we can, don't you? Maybe I can listen to them if you make them available in the MW--and then we can see if there are corrections that must be made. Sound O.K. to you? And thanks for picking up this project! :)

Hi, Jo--When you have a minute, if you could fix it so that I can access the MW, then I'll start getting it filled out. Thanks! :)

That would help, wouldn't it? BC and DPL both changed to you now. I thought I had the links to the old files working, so I need to go back and see what's up there.

Thank you! :) Links to the two files are working fine, so I will try to listen to them later this evening.

O.K., Jo--I think that I've gotten the MW completed. I will mention that 8 chapters in the middle of the book have chapter titles--the rest of them do not have any titles. So the MW looks kind of weird and incomplete, but that is actually the way it should be. I think that I'll edit the first post to mention it there also. Anyway, we can move to Readers Wanted whenever you wish, I believe. And thanks again! :)

I anticipate a boost of interest in reading on the slavery topic once the movie, 12 Years A Slave, hits the theaters! I checked today and the book has already been recorded for Librivox!

You may be correct, Michele. Let's hope that we have lots of interested readers here! :) I'm a bit worried that some of the dialect written by the author may scare people away, but we shall see.

I listened to Chapters 1 and 2 last night, trying to catch the style and tempo before recording 3 and 4. Pauline Hopkins is a fine writer! And the reader did a great job! I don't want to commit to too much at once but am really looking forward to participating in this project.
