Sylvie and Bruno by Lewis Carroll (1832 - 1898).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/sylvie-and-bruno-dramatic-reading-by-lewis-carroll/

Sylvie and Bruno, first published in 1889, and its 1893 second volume Sylvie and Bruno Concluded form the last novel by Lewis Carroll published during his lifetime. Both volumes were illustrated by Harry Furniss.

The novel has two main plots; one set in the real world at the time the book was published (the Victorian era), the other in the fantasy world of Fairyland. While the latter plot is a fairy tale with many nonsense elements and poems, similar to Carroll's Alice books, the story set in Victorian Britain is a social novel, with its characters discussing various concepts and aspects of religion, society, philosophy and morality.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/620
Please refer to the following spreadsheet for details of roles and text links:
      http://tinyurl.com/ol484tu
Please note that the spreadsheet has three pages: navigation is by the tabs at the bottom of the screen
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

It is requested that roles be claimed by readers of the appropriate gender and age.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Type of prooflistening requested: Special for Dramatic Works. Individual roles should be PL'd against the text as soon as they are submitted to ensure that no lines have been left out. Final edited files should be PL'd against the original source text (not Google docs).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

There will be 24 sections to be allocated to readers in this project. The following roles have already been taken:
The Professor - Ernst Pattynama
The Other Professor - Rowland
The Gardener - LenXZ1
Uggug - Lucy_k_p
Lady Muriel - Loveday

Gender specific and age specific casting will be very much preferred for this project.

Ernst Pattynama, who prepared the script (thank you, Ernst), will be the editor.

Cheers

Algy, do you have scripts for the characters or do we just use the one on Gutenberg? Just wondering, so I could start recording! :D

EDIT: Oh, I found them on the spreadsheet..silly me! :P

Here's Bruno for Chapter 1! I didn't quite understand the filename, as it said "[chapternumber]_[actnumber]" so I just put the chapter. Let me know if this is okay. :D

Thanks Frances

File was named correctly, in spite of the confusing directions in the opening post, which has now been amended.

Reading is great! PL OK

Dear Algy: Here's my recording of the Professor (chapter 2)
http://librivox.org/uploads/m8b1/sylvieandbruno_professor_02_128kb.mp3
the MW is still a complete blank. I've tried to remedy it but haven't succeeded. I thought it would be fixed by the end of September?
Listened to "Bruno". Very fine!!
Finished a Dutch DR of a short story. Fun to do and there's seems to be an appetite for more of the same with our Dutch readers.
Good Luck!

Hi Ernest,

Please do not put brackets in the file name ~ it breaks the link. I will fix this one presently. :-)
Edit - all fixed!
