Nicholas is forced into unwelcome employment to help secure support for his widowed mother and his sister from their mercenary uncle, Ralph, upon whose mercy they have been thrown. His sister, Kate, has to contend with the unwelcome attentions of her uncle's business associates. After many adventures Nicholas finally triumphs over his Uncle, although his success is also tinged with sadness. The book contains many memorable characters: the Yorkshire schoolmaster Wackford Squeers, the traveling thespian Vincent Crummles, the poor drudge Smike, the clerk Newman Noggs, and the wonderful and generous Brothers Cheeryble." - Chris Garbett

Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Chapter [number] of Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  • AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

IMPORTANT - Readers please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in the project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your section(s) may be opened up to new readers.

Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
  • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
    http://upload.librivox.org
    Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: sp - Steampunk
  • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Naturally, Anna. This will be a bit more long-term than previous projects, and I am not sure if I have been a little over-optimistic with the completion date!

There is also another shorter project I have in mind to break the mood occasionally.

I am going to finish Valmont first, though!

Hi Chris, I'll MC for you if you like :) I think you're an experienced volunteer (I certainly recognize your name), but if you have any questions, just let me know. I'll add you to the database directly.

You may use my server to store your files:
http://librivox.kayray.org/
password: vox

I'll make a subdirectory called "nickleby" and move your files there as you upload them.
If you have trouble with my uploader, just use http://mediafire.com/

Um, what else... oh, if Real Life intrudes and you get stuck for a while, just check in here every couple of months so I know you're still alive :)

Happy reading!

p.s. if the first section should be 01 instead of 00, let me know and I'll change it :)
p.p.s. Anna - Thanks for proofing! :)

Thanks, Kayray, for stepping in to MC for me.

I have completed one project and another is on the point of completion, so, although I am a new recruit, I have a little experience on LibriVox!

Thanks for the server space too.
Um, what else... oh, if Real Life intrudes and you get stuck for a while, just check in here every couple of months so I know you're still alive :)
Why, what have you heard? :D :D

Actually, may a true word.... I have a serious heart condition, :( so if anything untoward occurs, I am sure my wife will let you know! :)

Hehehe, just a figure of speech :) I'm sure you'll continue hale and hearty, and record many a book for us!

Let's hope so, anyway!

I am really looking forward to this project.

BTW - section 00 is an author's preface, so it's OK as is.

The Chapter titles are quite long so I think the ID tag should be ## - Chapter #.

I was uploading the file of Chapter 1 to the server and the connection was reset, and the file was corrupted - so two files of chapter 1 appear on the server but neither is complete! It should be 12.3Mb, but one of them only has the LibriVox disclaimer, the other is cut off before the end.

I am uploading to mediafire instead!

It's still only just after 5am in San Diego, so when kayray gets up she'll fix it, I'm sure!
