I'm editing chapters 3 & 4 this evening. How's everyone else doing with theirs?

Sounds great, Gord. I felt Buck's confusion and anger at being kidnapped and shipped north.

My chapters are here, soon to get over to archive.org

Thanks for the kind words, Kristen! I enjoyed your chapters, too.

It's a great book to do ... I haven't read it since I was 13 or so, and didn't remember much about the book. It's a fun one to read (except for the headache of trying to figure out what sort of crazy accent Francois has! ).

I look forward to the rest of the chapters.

btw, I've got chapter 2 done, but I'm having some problems uploading it to OurMedia and/or archive.org... I'll try it again tomorrow.

this is really great ... there's a race on between psmith & call of the wild - either of which might beat out secret agent as the first book finished!

by the way, great recordings, both.

First, let me say I thoroughly enjoyed everyone's reading in this collaborative effort. You each brought a uniquely wonderful dimension to your chapters.

But one concern I have is that the [mp3@64kbps - 22.1MB] version of chapter 7 seems to end in midsentence and does not have the customary "End of [book title] by [author] blah blah blah". I can tell it must be very close to the end of the chapter, but am a little worried about this nontheless.

Maybe I'm just being too obsessive.

Hello Steelshade. Thanks a lot for noting and posting of errors.

Though it's fine here: She says: "End of chapter 7. End of Call of the Wild".

Idea of possible causes: your connection broke almost before it was finished downloading chapter7. You would still be able to play mp3 files. Simply data would be missing.

Or your mp3 player is set to fade tracks into each other and faded to the next track a few seconds before the end.
I learned that track-fading and audiobooks don?t go well with each other because sentences get cut off. I often have to set my player differently either for hearing books or music. Annoying. Mostly i leave trackfading off then.

Thanks for replying, Stephan.

I have downloaded it 2 separate times with the same result. Thanks for the ideas of how to resolve the problem, I'll look into it.

It's just that all other audio files I have from Librivox/archive.org have not been "cut-off", leaving me to wonder why this one should be any different.

And the cut-off I experience is an abrupt end, not a fading out.

Even more interesting: The LibriVox download page for Call of the Wild indicates that chapter 7 is 46:01 in length. The file I have downloaded is also 46:01 in length, so I did not miss the end of the file. It ends, "And Buck ran with..." then a sudden cut off, right at 46:01, no fading.

I can only conclude, Stephen, that we have downloaded different files. How long is your file of Chapter 7? Where precisely are you downloading it from? Are you downloading the 64kbps version or the 128kbps or the ogg version? My problem is with the 64kbps version.

Chapter 7 - 64k version.
downloaded on the 27. Dec. 2005

21,572 kb
46.01 minutes

Ends correctly with "end of book"

Hm.....tried a different audioplayer, Steel Shade?

Steel -- there are known issues with playing our audiofiles using Real Player -- the last second or so will be cut off. Of course, you'll only notice this if there are _not_ a couple of extra seconds of silence at the end of the file (that's why we ask everyone to leave a little bit of silence at the end of each recording).

Is that what you're using? If so, maybe you will consider using a different player :)

And I appologize if I ruffled any feathers. I have only the highest respect for all the readers and people of LibriVox.

One last question... What is the recommended player for LibriVox recordings?
I have split this topic off into it's owh thread discussing Audio Players. Please continue the conversation here: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=977
