Hi Jon the Cat. I am cataloging a story by Garrett right now and he is indeed an underrated writer. Look for That Sweet Little Old Lady very soon.jonthecat wrote:I have downloaded a bunch of book, some great, some so-so, but I have been listening to some books by Randall Garrett the last couple days and they are pretty good! I never even heard of him before so it was good to hear books that are good but maybe not famous any more. Thank you LibriVox for those books!

A little off-subject:
It's just a shame that Randall Garrett's Lord D'Arcy stories aren't in the public domain (not to mention The Gandalara Cycle, which was under his name and was outlined by him, but completed by Vicki Heydron when he was terminally ill).
These are all wonderful reads ... and Michael Kurland has written some more stories in the Lord D'Arcy universe, if you get a taste for them.

from a grateful listener
I just wanted to say that I am partially sighted so rely heavily on audio. I also love older titles which are not available commercially in audio formats. So I am hugely grateful to your volunteers who read the sort of books I enjoy.
Hello,
I would like to express my admiration and gratitude for all your work. Once I started recording myself I realized that it's hard work and significant expense of personal time.
The group reading of Wilkie Collins' "Woman in White" was probably what impressed me the most of the many works I've now listened to, so my special thanks go to the readers of that fine work and to the MC and BC and the prooflisteners who facilitated its creation.
Thank you!

Thank you all out there in Librivox land. Your serve as oral monks illuminating and preserving ancient and nearly forgotten texts, and I am and the world is better for your efforts.

This is a hearty thank you to those LVers who have, at different times, taken it upon themselves to head up the weekly and fortnightly poetry projects. Poetry is a deep love of mine, and I absolutely adore the idea of having multiple readings in multiple accents of poetry.
To hear different intonations greatly facilitates the understanding and enjoyment of poetry, I find, and almost always good poems are best appreciated aloud.
So thank you!

Hello,
I have a rather repetitive job and a complicated (often stressful) life. It can be difficult to turn all of that off so that my job doesn't turn into an internal torture. I have been listening to audio books for several years, it helps me focus and not drive myself crazy. I was downloading books from iTunes that has a collection from the University of South Florida. It was a complicated process, I don't have any Apple products and am really not really into technology beyond what it can do to make my life easier. I was also running out of books that interested me, so I started trying to find anything that provided free audio books that were of quality. I tried one or two from project Gutenberg, but I found (I don't know if it is their whole collection or just the sampling that I listened to) that it was a computer recording and it was completely intolerable. I did however find your site in my search and I can't believe I've been listening to books for so long and had no idea that your site existed. You're collection is huge and growing. Your readers are diverse, and while the recordings are not perfect, I like the human aspect of the occasional flaws. It reminds me that you are everyday people that volunteer your time to share your passion and interest for people like me, stuck in a repetitive job trying not to drive myself crazy. I want to thank all of you, you have been a great resource and not only help me daily to preserve my sanity, you've been able to help me read (or listen) to books that I've always wanted to read but would never, ever have had the time to get to. And honestly, I have issues with ADD, there are so many books that I've started and have only gotten halfway through. I would hit a slow spot and would put the book down for the evening then be too busy to start again for a few days. When I picked it up again, I would not be able to push through the slow spot to finish. Since I have started listening to audio books, I have never left any of them half finished.
Please pass along my deep gratitude to your volunteers, especially the ones involved in providing the works of Charles Dickens (a personal favorite). Listening has become a part of my everyday life, I listen when doing house and yard work, on long road trips, and my daughters have even started asking what I'm listening to and if they can listen with me, even if it's in the middle of a book (they liked Anne of green gables).
Again, thank you so much,
Tasha

This message just reminds me of the Calligraphy quotes I am collecting for my students, one of which is:

Being blind, I have many resources available for accessible books but I have such a deep appreciation for your service, particularly when you have titles which are unavailable in accessible formats from other specialized libraries. What you're doing is wonderful. As I am able to put public domain texts into Braille it is my hope to be able to read a chapter or two for Librivox at some point; it would be a real kick for me to do that and it's a way I can pay forward all that I've gotten from Librivox.
