Clarissa Harlowe Volume 3 by Samuel Richardson (1689 - 1761) .

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/clarissa-harlowe-or-the-history-of-a-young-lady-volume-3-by-samuel-richardson/
Clarissa Harlowe, is the tragic heroine of this story, she is a beautiful and virtuous young lady whose family has become wealthy only recently and now desires to become part of the aristocracy. Originally they planned to concentrate the wealth and lands of the Harlowe's into the possession of James Harlowe, Clarissa's brother whose wealth and political power will lead to his being given a title. Clarissa's grandfather has left her a substantial piece of property upon his death, and a new route to the nobility opens through Clarissa marrying Robert Lovelace, heir to an earldom. James's response is to provoke a duel with Lovelace, who is seen thereafter as the family's enemy. James also proposes that Clarissa marry Roger Solmes, who is willing to trade properties with James to concentrate James's holdings and speed his becoming Lord Harlowe. The family agrees and attempts to force Clarissa to marry Solmes, whom she finds physically disgusting as well as boorish. The story continues to twist and turn through a series of letters written between two women, two men and a variety of other characters which continues throughout the 9 volumes of the book. Volumes 1 and 2 are in the catalogue this will be Volume 3. (Summary by Michele Eaton )
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? April 2014
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.
Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/9881
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Please note this is a series of letters between the characters in the book. My intention is for each reader to sign up to the whole set of letters for the particular character they choose. Some only have 1 or 2 letters others have a lot more please check you will be able to complete all the letters for a character before you sign up to them thanks.

I would prefer gender specific for the characters please.

    Mr Robert Lovelace: 20 sections

    Joseph Leman: 2 sections

FAO an admin: I have picked up this project from the multi-volume works still to be completed in my effort to complete works already in progress. My aim is to eventually do all the remaining volumes 4 to 9 but one at a time till they are all completed. Please could someone record the changes in that thread.

Hi Michele, I was involved with the first volume of this so I might as well go along for the ride on this one. Will go set up the MW.

Hi Barry sorry to be a pain but could I have 2 more sections added to the window. I want to split one of the chapters and also there are some other parts that need reading separately that I am going to do thanks.

Hi,

I am a new member and would like to sign up to read Clarissa's letters, if they're still available. I loved 'Pamela' and have a pretty good idea about the style, syntax and pronunciation from the Richardson's day. I see another reader asked that the longer letters be pieced into smaller sections...maybe that would be a good idea for some of the letters measuring a page (600/700 words) or more?

Please let me know!

Thanks,

Brennan

Welcome to Librivox
Please read the following information in particular the 1 minute test which will need to be completed before you begin to record sections for projects. I will reserve the sections for you on this project but I would suggest that as you are new here that you complete some smaller single sections on other projects before fully committing your self to this one. I am not trying to put you off but this is a big commitment for a new member so it is good to gain experience on small sections before moving on.

With regard to splitting of the letters I would prefer not to as there are only two of the letters which are a little longer and it would be a lot of work to change the Magic Window at this stage. If when you get to recording them you wanted to submit them in sections and I would then edit them together into one file that would be ok but we can discuss that nearer the time if that is to be an option.

Please could you let me know under what name you would like to appear in the catalogue this can be your forum name, a nickname, your real name or a pseudonym. Thanks

You may like to introduce yourself to the community in the "introduce yourself" forum: http://forum.librivox.org/viewforum.php?f=17

An overview of how Librivox works can be found here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/How_LibriVox_Works

There are numerous ways to volunteer here. An important one is proof-listening, which consists of checking someone's recording for errors. If you'd like to give that a try, you can find lots of information here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Guide_for_Proof-listeners

If you wish to try your hand at recording, the place to start is the Newbie Guide to Recording: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Newbie_Guide_to_Recording, which tells you how to set up your computer to record.

We urge you to make a "1 Minute Test" for review before you start actively recording. This is NOT an audition, but a way to check to make sure all your technical settings are correct, your volume loud enough, etc. You will find the information for the 1-Minute Test Recording here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test. The instructions also tell you how to upload your test and then post in the Listeners and Editors Wanted forum so someone can give you feedback on it.

One of our volunteers has created a number of videos that you might find helpful to learn more about the workings of Librivox. You can find a listing of those here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/User:Philchenevert

Also to point out to professional (or aspiring) Voice Over artists, all our recordings are put back into the public domain which means sometimes they are sold on ebay, etc. Have a look at this page which describes our Public Domain policy: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Copyright_and_Public_Domain

We hope you have fun and please, don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
