The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain (1835 - 1910) .

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-adventures-of-tom-sawyer-dramatic-reading-by-mark-twain/
Growing up on the banks of the Mississipi river, a mischievious boy named Tom Sawyer spends his days getting into one scrape after another. Tom's cleverness, superstition, trickery, and daring make him a handful to raise, and his Aunt Polly declares that she has "never seen the beat of that boy!" Nonetheless, Tom is essentially good-hearted. But when he is witness to a horrible crime, his courage and integrity are tested beyond anything he ever expected.

A note to parents: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is considered a children's classic, but contains racial slurs which, although "acceptable" in the time and place of the story's setting, will likely offend modern listeners. (Summary by Eden Rea-Hedrick)

  1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.
Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  2. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a role to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which role you'd like to read. Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/74 Please read from the texts linked in the chapter sections in the MW
  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

NOTE: to the readers of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Injun Joe - All of the aforementioned characters use the "n" word at least once in the book (Huck says it frequently.) LibriVox has a "no censorship" policy, so the word must be recorded as it is. Injun Joe also says "damn" frequently. Also, a GENERAL NOTE: The character called "Injun Joe" is referred to by this name by all the other characters, and is also at times referred to as "the half-breed". Again, the "no censorship" policy applies. Please note that the characters who use these words are not being deliberately cruel; they are only ignorant and products of their time.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: to the whole cast - most of the characters in this book speak in a somewhat heavy Missouri dialect.

Between being a full-time college student and working 20+ hours per week, I'm not able to be involved at LV these days, but I remain a loyal fan and look forward to a triumphant return sometime in the (probably distant) future.

Well, here goes! I will be reading Tom myself, and Amanda has claimed Becky, but all the 34 other roles are available (including the narrator, which is a sizeable commitment). Please claim something! I would like gender-specific casting as much as possible, but I'd like to have all the young boys (Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Joe Harper, Cousin Sid, Alfred Temple, Ben Rogers, Billy, and the Little Boy) read by women (unless there are some 8 to 15 year-old boys who volunteer for LV that I don't know about).

Also, I would like to get a DPL to listen to the individual parts as they come in as well as to the final chapters. Special PL requested (reading along with the text to check for missing or misplaced lines.)

I read this back in middle school, but unfortunately, I don't remember much of it, so just stick me in wherever I'm needed.
What am I up to?

Thank you for asking, Grace, but surprisingly enough, despite her importance to the plot, Amy does not actually have any lines! Would you be interested in another part? Perhaps Cousin Mary or Joe Harper?

EDIT: Arielle has claimed Mary, but there are plenty of parts left!

Absolutely, Cat! It's a fun part (and large. Huck appears in 18 chapters with numerous monologues.) Thanks for claiming!

Well, would you rather play a male or a female character? (I'm having the boys read by women.) There are plenty of both, with the boy roles being larger for the most part.

Could I read Cousin Mary? That was the first role I ever played onstage, in my 3rd grade production of Tom Sawyer...and look what that led to. :)

(I'll also MC for you, if that sweetens the deal - but I would like to know a little bit more about the management of this project. Who's going to be doing the editing? Will you be doing it yourself or do you have editors lined up? I'm also a little nervous that you don't have a narrator lined up. Would you be prepared to narrate yourself if no one volunteers?)

Absolutely you may play Mary! As for editing, I am doing that myself. I am prepared to do the narration myself if no one comes along after a few weeks (though I'd prefer not to have to).

If you're okay with a female narrator, I would like to narrate. If not, I'll read Aunt Polly. :)
