History of England from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688, Volume 1D by David Hume (1711 - 1776) -arb .

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-history-of-england-from-the-invasion-of-julius-caesar-to-the-revolution-of-1688-volume-1d-by-david-hume/

David Hume is one of the great philosophers of the Western intellectual tradition. His philosophical writings earned him lasting fame and renown; his historical writing earned his bread and butter. His "The History of England from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688", published between 1754 and 1764, was immensely popular and Hume wrote that "the copy-money given me by the booksellers much exceeded any thing formerly known in England; I was become not only independent, but opulent." The six volume work has had numerous editions and is still in print today. David Hume and Thomas Babington Macaulay have frequently been compared as the premier English historians but we don't have to choose because Macaulay begins where Hume leaves off.

This is Volume 1D which covers the reigns of Elizabeth I to James I. (Summary by Richard Carpenter)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is 2013-March-30 .

Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): I will provide a link for each section to the text at Google Docs. The entire work is at: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/19214/19214-h/19214-h.htm
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

I want to thank all of the readers of the first three volumes of the Hume History project. There are six volumes in all so we are half done. A special thank you to Michelle our DPL. She has devoted more time to this project than anyone. I also appreciate Anne's work as our MC on volumes 1A through 1C.

Much of this volume is already taken :D so as soon as Volume 1D 100% assigned, I will launch 1E.

Diana: Thanks for the update. I had the wrong box checked. I had tried out the links but I did it from my computer so it just recognized me. Try again and let me know if it doesn't work.

Katdad,

S 1.

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/arb/historyenglandvolume1d_01_hume.mp3

Duration 25:00 Db 90.

Michelle, this is a little on the high side, but it's kinda difficile to cut down 1 db within the software I use. I may have been just a little too close to the mike. If you note too much volume, or plosives/mouth noises, please tell me and I'll make the changes necessary. I don't mind at all, re-recording entirely, it's only 25 mins.

I want Elizabeth to be proud of me.

There is a phrase Hume uses when he regards her political activity post accession, "though determined in her own mind, she resolved to proceed by gradual and secure steps." So should all governments be led:)
