Short Ghost and Horror Story Collection Vol. 019
This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/short-ghost-and-horror-story-collection-vol-019-by-various/

NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.
  1. How to submit a story, and 'how it all works' here
Please select and record any short ghost or horror story in the public domain. Try to stick to works that run less than 60 minutes. There is no need to "sign-up" before recording... as long as the work is clearly in the public domain, just start recording. Multiple versions are always welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your selection already; we're happy to hear your version too. :)

A ghost or horror story should have something of an otherworldly or gruesome nature at its core. (Preferably, it should be nominally fictional, but there are enough 'true' ghost stories that they will be accepted into this collection as well.) Take a look at the various collections in this forum and decide which collection your story would work best in.

Please note that a lot of Lovecraft's work is still under copyright - there's a thread here that has an up-to-date list of confirmed PD stories.

Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which story you are submitting to the collection. Please include all this information:

    • link to the text source
    • author name
    • title of the story
    • duration (runtime) of the file
    • if this is your first recording: how you would like to be listed in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal web site/blog.

Read points 5. to 7. below for what to do before, during and after your recording, and how to send your file.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
No. This collection will be open until it is full (20 stories have been submitted), at which point another one may be started.
  4. Where can I find horror and ghost stories?
Good sources for ghost and horror stories are Literary Gothic and Classic Horror Short Stories. Of course there will also be bunches on Gutenberg.

Previous Short Ghost and Horror Collections can be found here - duplicate versions are fine, though preferably not in the same volume.
  5. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  6. DURING recording:
Leave no more than 0.5-1 second of silence at the beginning of your file.
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "[Story title] by [Author name]. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
      "[Story title] by [Author name]."
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Story Title]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
  7. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit (optional).

The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
File Name: (lower case, separated by underscores):

    ghohor019_shorttitleinoneword_author_readersinitials.mp3, e.g. ghohor019_roomintower_benson_ce.mp3

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    - Title/Name: [Story Title] (e.g. The Room in the Tower)
    - Artist: [Author Name] (e.g. E.F. Benson)
    - Album: LibriVox Short Ghost and Horror Story Collection Vol. 019

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: ba - bart
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me.

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thank you Chiquito for these two.

Thank you Frobisher. Although Rocit already had PLd your story (thank you Rocit!) I still wait for your test-recording to get the PL-OK. That's the way we do thing around here.

Dear Bart and Chiquito,

This is my first attempt at proof listening. Here are my PL notes for Section 3, Chiquito Castro's reading of Mr. Gray's Strange Story:

1. Lead in of silence is less than one half second.*

2. Reader knocks on table and re-starts at (28:17)

3. The file name should use all lower case letters.*

*Accepted for this project per BC.

It was a pleasure listening. Thank you!

Dear Bart and Chiquito,

This is my second attempt at proof listening. Here are my PL notes for Section 2, Chiquito Castro's reading of They by Rudyard Kipling.

1. Lead in of silence is less than one half second.*

2. Reader repeats "I saw the glint of his blue..." at (08:16)

3. Reader repeats "...there was little sign of decay..." at (34:00)

4. The file name should use all lower case letters.*

*Accepted for this project per BC.

It was a pleasure listening. Thank you!

PS. Let me know if you'd like me to DPL this project?

Thank you Peter.
For this project I accept a few things that are not standard for LV.
The filename may contain capitals.
The leading silence can be less than 0.5 seconds (but cannot be longer than 1 second!).
These two problems needn't be corrected. I'll leave the other problems to Chiquito.

I'd love to have you as DPL Peter.
To make this thread not longer than needed, I suggest that you don't add the things that are correct. It's also easy to miss a noted problem, when the post is this long.
I'll add you to the project as DPL!

Bart,

I'll leave out things that are correct in the future (my way of demonstrating, first time out, that I really did download the file, run it through the Checker, upload it to Audacity and follow the text). Although I would like to learn PL standard practices before working on non-standardized projects, if you will let me know, which standards we are disregarding, why the standards are what they are and how it's ok to ignore them, I am glad to DPL this project.
