The Black-Bearded Barbarian by Mary Esther Miller MacGregor (27/08/1874 - 10/02/1961) .

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

http://librivox.org/the-black-bearded-barbarian-by-mary-esther-miller-macgregor/

A fictionalised biography of George Mackay (1844-1901), an influential Presbyterian missionary in northern Taiwan. (Summary by Edmund Bloxam)

  • Target completion date: 2012-Sep-28
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1759
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'll MC this for you Edmund. Please note that I have changed the text link to this page http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1759 which is the link we use in the catalog. :)

Edmund,

Can you please update the magic window when you upload files? Since this isn't your first solo, I'd assumed you had done this before. If that's not the case, let me know and I'll send you your bc login and some instructions.

thanks :)

I remember now how to do it. I haven't touched this in a long time.

Also, I need six more sections. I judged chapter lengths incorrectly.

I've added 6 sections to the MW for you. I also added the listen links and "PL Needed" for your first four files. You can continue with the rest. I've also just noticed that you are capitalizing the author's name in the filename. Please keep the filenames all lower case for the rest of the files (i.e., blackbeardedbarbarian_##_macgregor.mp3). I fixed the ones you've already uploaded on the server so the links in the MW will work, but the ones in the thread will not unless you edit them as well.

If we don't pick up a DPL in the next day or two, I'll move the thread and post an ad for one over in Listener's Wanted for you. Or if you prefer to do this yourself, see this post for the template and other information.

I'll DPL this for you if I may! I've listened to part of the first section, and it sounds great so far. :D

Assuming it's okay (and not being able to wait to get started!), I've finished PLing the first batch. Posting my notes here since I can't get to the MW yet. (It's not nearly as much as it looks like, and most of it is the same for multiple sections.) :)

Part 1--
Missing "End of Part 1" at end

Part 2--
Disclaimer missing "Librivox" (reads "this recording is in the public domain" rather than "this Librivox recording...")
Repeat at about 5:47 ("and from each terrace to the one below...")
Long pause (about 6 seconds) at 11:56
Missing "End of Part 2" and 5 seconds of silence at end

Part 3--
Disclaimer missing "Librivox"
Missing "End of Part 3" and 5 seconds of silence at end

Part 4--
Disclaimer missing "Librivox"
Unusual pauses at 35:39-42
Missing "End of Part 4" and 10 seconds of silence at end

Part 5--
Noticeable hiss that intensifies at points
Missing "End of Part 5" and 5 seconds of silence at end

Parts 1-3 also have somewhat of a hiss behind them, but I'm not sure how noticeable it is. I didn't notice it until I listened to Part 4, which does not have it.

Overall, it sounds great! Planning on listening to Part 6 tomorrow.

Chapter Six changed, seven loaded.

I can't help with the sarcasm-this text takes hyperbole to a whole new level. I liked it when he dismissed all the great Eastern religions with one sentence each, then proceeded to, in a month, to master and dismiss the whole content of Chinese knowledge.
