(dramatic reading) The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton (1862 - 1937) .
The Age of Innocence centers on an upper-class couple's impending marriage, and the introduction of a woman plagued by scandal whose presence threatens their happiness. Though the novel questions the assumptions and morals of 1870s' New York society, it never devolves into an outright condemnation of the institution. In fact, Wharton considered this novel an "apology" for her earlier, more brutal and critical novel, The House of Mirth. Not to be overlooked is Wharton's attention to detailing the charms and customs of the upper caste. The novel is lauded for its accurate portrayal of how the 19th-century East Coast American upper class lived, and this, combined with the social tragedy, earned Wharton a Pulitzer Prize — the first Pulitzer awarded to a woman. Edith Wharton was 58 years old at publication; she lived in that world, and saw it change dramatically by the end of World War I. The title is an ironic comment on the polished outward manners of New York society, when compared to its inward machinations. (Summary by Wikipedia)
This project is complete. All audio files can be found on the catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-age-of-innocence-dramatic-reading-by-edith-wharton/

This project was started back in 2012 and then abandoned. I (Todd) am going to restart this (Feb 2020) to try to get it finished by editing, with Adrian helping me by PL'ing.

This project is on its third MC, so if a link in the MW does not work, check for the submitted file in MaryAnn's upload folder here: https://librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/

  1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.
Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  2. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here

To find a role to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which role you'd like to read. Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?

Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): Please read from the Google Docs below. http://www.gutenberg.org/files/541/541-h/541-h.htm
  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

If you are not familiar with The Age of Innocence, I have created a Character Chart with a brief description of each character listed below.

Okay, I really hope this stuff above is right. There are several roles. Some are already taken: Narrator, May, Ellen, Newland, and Granny Mingott. Cat has also graciously consented to be the DPL. :D

OK, I think everything is all set up. (Sorry for the delay, I had to answer the phone while I was setting things up.) I edited the first post a bit, since you used the group projects template - for dramatic readings it's better to use the dramatic works template, just FYI for the future! :) No big deal, just needed to alter a couple of things. Check through and make sure I haven't altered anything that I shouldn't have...

Otherwise, I think you're good to go! I'm here to help if you have any questions or problems - just let me know.

Thanks! I was scared to death. I was really, honestly scared to push that submit button. I don't think I was that nervous when I got married. Whew! lol! I really appreciate the encouragement. With a support team like you guys, I know it is going to be fine! It may be a little bumpy, but it will be fun, and I will learn a lot! :D

Mmf. Well, I am instructed by a certain Dominatrix of Dramatic Readings that I should sign up for Julius Beaufort, so I'd better do that I suppose! :P

(My only reservation is that I like to read the book in question, and I'll be deep in Tom Jones for aaaaages before I can get around to this one... Heigh-ho, I shall just have to record it 'blind'! :D )

Awesome! Well, just imagine that stereotypical stylish man that has a shadowy past who goes around seducing women (or at least attempting to seduce women) while the rest of the male world watches. All confidence, fashion, double meanings - ultimately all fake, except his love for his long mistress.

Does that help?
