Wow, I came across this author whose copyrights were not renewed who wrote neat recent sci fi books.

Piper, H. Beam, 1904-1964

Check out http://www.sffaudio.com. They've posted a challenge to record a post-1930's public domain audiobook. They have listed several good books that are available for recording. Even better, the first person to complete a solo recording of one of the books on the list gets a free commercial audiobook as a prize!

The list (quoted from the sffaudio page):

The Secret Of The Ninth Planet by Donald A. Wollheim |Manybooks.net|

Badge Of Infamy by Lester Del Rey |Gutenberg Project|

The Sky Is Falling by Lester Del Rey |Gutenberg Project|

This World is Taboo by Murray Leinster |Manybooks.net| (Manybooks.net has a computer generated audiobook, but of course such a reading sucks compared to a human being)

Operation: Outer Space by Murray Leinster |Manybooks.net|

The Answer by H. Beam Piper |Manybooks.net|

The Cosmic Computer (AKA Junkyard Planet) by H. Beam Piper |Manybooks.net|

The Black Star Passes by John W. Campbell |Manybooks.net|

City At World's End by Edmond Hamilton |Manybooks.net|

Plague Ship by Andre Norton |Manybooks.net|

The Defiant Agents by Andre Norton |Manybooks.net|

Star Surgeon by Alan Nourse |Manybooks.net|

Warlord of Kor by Terry Gene Carr |Manybooks.net|

The Door Through Space by Marion Zimmer Bradley |Manybooks.net|

A Strange Manuscript Found In A Copper Cylindner by James De Mille |Manybooks.net

The Skylark Of Space by E.E. Doc Smith |Manybooks.net|

Triplanetary by E.E. Doc Smith |Manybooks.net|

The Galaxy Primes by E.E. Doc Smith |Manybooks.net|

The Green Odyssey by Philip Jose Farmer |Manybooks.net[/list]

Wow! Me for the Green Odyssey! One of my favourite early sf novels.

I won't be recording it for a while, though, as I have four other recordings to finish first.

We are recording The Warlord of Kor right now in Readers Wanted. I shall have to investigate the rest of this list as I love SF.

Are there any other HBP works you'd recommend? And who did Gunpowder God - I can't find it anywhere.

"Gunpowder god" is still under copyright.
See http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Science_Fiction_%28Bookshelf%29#Piper.2C_H._Beam.2C_1904-1964 for available (or soon available) H. Beam Piper books.
I recommend simply all of them.
For the book source i recommend Project Gutenberg. The SF books (and many of the other books coming from Distributed Proofreaders) are of superb quality. Clean HTML with images. All the other sources usually posting the same books earlier can only do so by compromising on quality.

Cosmic Computer (AKA Junkyard Planet) well under way in Solo's. Next up: HBP short story collection.

And you're so right...Cosmic is from Manybooks.net...isn't on Gutenberg for whatever reason. Full of typo's and OCR errors...very frustrating..won't use again.

Go for it! And if you do, you might want to let the folks over at SFFaudio know. DTS is on their "challenge list", so if you complete a solo audiobook you could win a free commercial audiobook as a prize. You can check out the rules here:

I'll admit to being fascinated by how much more complex it makes the whole copyright issue; in other words:
"Any work published from 1923 onward is considered to be under copyright; unless, although published after 1923 onward, was subject to but did not record renewal of copyright. Such books as were subject to such renewal but did not renew, are considered to be in the public domain."

Other than the sf titles here--is there an ongoing list, somewhere, of 'Books that you might think are still copyright, but are really not' ? (I'm sure there's been a discussion of the issue in other forums.)
