This book is now complete and can be downloaded from the LibriVox catalogue: http://librivox.org/edison-his-life-by-dyer-and-martin/

Edison, His Life and Inventions by Frank Lewis Dyer and Thomas Commerford Martin

This is a former solo project which we're trying to finish as a collaboration! Please ignore the first 3 thread pages - collab thread starts on p. 4.
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: end of June 2008 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/820
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!

    (BC admin link)
  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  7. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "Chapter [number] of Edison, His Life and Inventions. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
"Edison, His Life and Inventions by Frank Lewis Dyer and Thomas Commerford Martin. [Chapter]"
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Edison, His Life and Inventions by Frank Lewis Dyer and Thomas Commerford Martin."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    edison_lifeinventions_##_dyer_martin.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (e.g. edison_lifeinventions_01_dyer_martin.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    Title: ## - [chapter name]
Author: Frank Lewis Dyer and Thomas Commerford Martin
Album: Edison, His Life and Inventions

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: ge - Gesine
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
    • your name/pseudonym as you want to appear in the LibriVox catalog, and your website URL if you like. These are only necessary if this is your first LibriVox recording.
    • the file size of your .mp3 file/duration of the recording.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. :)

Jazbees wrote:One question I have is about the handling of footnotes. Most footnotes in this text have numbered callouts that indicate where they belong in the main body of the work. Should the main reading be interrupted to read the associated footnote? If so, how should this be done for footnotes where the callout number appears in the middle of a sentence? (I spotted at least one instance of the latter as I skimmed the text)
It's up to you how to handle it, it has been done different ways in the past. A general concensus was reached (I'll try to track down the old threads for you to read through) to say "Begin footnote" and "End footnote" to make it clear when you were interrupting the text for a footnote. If you prefer to wait until the end of the sentence, I'm sure that will be fine. Do what feels right with the least disruption of the flow of the work.
Also, in at least one early chapter, there is something that appears to be a footnote of some kind, but is not labeled as such. It's just a short quote from Edison that is inserted between two paragraphs. My first guess is to simply preface it with "Quote from Thomas Edison", then read the quote, then say "end of quote" before moving on. Does that sound right?
That sounds perfect!

I've set up your project and edited the first post for you. Let me know if you have any questions along the way!

All right, I've updated the list with chapter titles. That's probably about as far as I'll go until I get some other things out of the way.

FYI:

Please note that we have a new policy for solo project: we now require soloists to check in every 4 weeks to give an update on how they're getting on with the project. If MCs don't hear from soloists, the project will be taken off-forum and off the catalogue's 'to come' section. However, if the soloist later wishes to reinstate the project, s/he can notify any admin to have this done. This policy was set up in an effort to cut down on dormant solo projects on the forum, and to free up time for MCs.

May I therefore please ask you to post updates here regularly. :)

Justin - this really doesn't apply to you since this is a new project but I'm putting it in all my soloists' threads to cover my bases!

First o' the year update...

Hoping to start recording this week, providing I can get a new mic. I'd prefer to record this whole project with a consistent sound (the perfectionist in me). However, with the holidays being unexpected as usual, expenses were on the high side and some of the money I thought would be allocated for the mic may have been spent, so I might have to wait 'til the mid-month paycheck before I can snag it. Still haven't done the final financial analysis yet, though...probably tomorrow...

Thanks for the update, Justin. My first solo projec is done halfway with my old mic and halfway with my new and it still bugs me, so I sympathize! :D

A hair later than I was hoping, but dagnabbit I'm gonna say I'm on schedule! :D Section 00 is done!

http://librivox.justinanimator.com/edison_lifeinventions_00_dyer_martin.mp3

For this section only, I read the titles of the authors after their respective names. I felt it was interesting information to include, and certainly appropriate as it was included in the Gutenberg document, but not something that I want to read in full for every section. For all later sections, I'll only read their names.

Now a question that I forgot to ask previously: do I need to keep all the files hosted on my server until it's time to catalog everything? Or are they copied to some other temp web space while it's all coming together?

Oh, and on a somewhat related note, do I fill in the "Notes" section of the magic window list with the "Listen!" links myself, or is this done by my lovely and talented MC?

Good job Justin! If you are short on server space, I can put them on mine and put the listen links in the magic window. If you have enough space on your own server, you can go ahead and put the Listen links in yourself. Either way, I'll download files onto my PC as you complete them just to be safe and have at least two copies. Just let me know if you want me to put them on my server.

I think I'll be okay for server space for now. I'll just make sure to keep an eye on it as the year progresses. This section was a rather short one compared to some.

Well, I got today's recording of section 01 done, but it'll be a couple days before I can get it edited. A bit of a long chapter, and there were many stumbles in the process. I need to work on slowing down and relaxing when I read. Sometimes I do well, but other times I find I'm pushing too fast, and the stumbles come fast and frequent when that happens, and it's more difficult to slow down again once that point is reached. Ugh...this is going to be an interesting year....
