One-Act Play Collection 005

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/one-act-play-collection-005-by-various/

This will be co-bc'ed by me (Kristingj) and Amanda (JoFriday21)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
This is a great opportunity for anyone who's always wanted to BC a dramatic reading but isn't quite ready to do a full-length play. (Of course it's open to experienced BCs as well!) Please note that if you propose a play for inclusion in the collection, you are responsible either for editing, proof-listening and coordinating it yourself, or for finding other volunteers to fill these roles. Volunteers outside the USA: Be aware that some of the plays are still protected by copyright law some places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955) or Canada (author's death plus 50 years).

Please claim your play in the thread; this collection will be capped at 10 plays. Each BC needs to provide the following information about each play:

    * Title and author
    * PD text link
    * Link to author on Wikipedia, and death date, if known
    * Link to title on Wikipedia
    * Number of roles (including narrator) this project will have
    * Original publication date

Feel free to claim a role for yourself if you like at the same time. Below are some resources you can use to find a play, but don't feel limited to these. Also, remember to check what has already been recorded in the previous One-Act Play Collections

    Fifty Contemporary One-Act Plays: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/36984

The Atlantic Book of Modern Plays: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/16435

    Washington Square Plays: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3068

Project Gutenberg also has a list of many authors who have written one-act plays: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/One_Act_Plays_%28Bookshelf%29

Readers: to find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is January 1, 2013..

  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:

    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  7. DURING recording:
Please leave no more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!

Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    [b[Role], read by [your name][/b]

If you are reading stage directions, please include for each file:

At the beginning: [Title] by [Author]. This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit Librivox dot org.

At the end: End of [title], by [author].

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3

    titleinoneword_charactername_authorsurname.mp3 (all lower-case). (e.g. riderstothesea_nora_synge.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    Title: Title of Play
    Artist: Author Name
    Album: One-Act Play Collection 005

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader:
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: al - wildemoose
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Okay, I will get this set up for you! I think I'll give you 50 sections rather than 25 so you have more space to work with--it's easier to delete unused sections than to move everything around if you have to add something. Also, remember that your individual play BCs will not have access to the Magic Window (unless they are admins) so Amanda and Kristin will need to take care of that for all submitted sections.

ETA: You are all set! Let me know if you need any help or have any questions about how to organize this beast.

And I would like to BC this one:

- Abstraction (author unknown, a Japanese drama, translated by Basil Hall Chamberlain)
- n/a
- n/a
- 4 roles: A husband, his wife and Taraukuwazhiya, their servant (male please); Narrator
- 1900 (see book above)

Contents: A husband is seeing another woman, but his wife is getting suspicious. As he is not allowed to go out, he claims to be meditating for a while - but in reality, their servant takes his place while the husband is frolicking about...

I'd like to claim the role of the wife.
I will BC (as far as this is possible ), edit and also PL - but I would appreciate another Pler for my role and the final work.
Cheers, Ava.

Oh, and two roles have already been claimed--Amanda will play Henrietta and I will play Stephen.

I'd also considered doing a second one act play, but I think I'll wait to see what everyone else is doing before I start hogging all the available slots.

Thanks Kristin. :)

But it looks like someone named "Allomak" is signed up for Henrietta, instead of Amanda (JoFriday21).

- a short Egyptian tomb melodrama

Here is the first one of the two I'd like to do. I saw the Baltimore Concert Opera do this a few months ago and loved the plot and story. Puccinni's music is lovely but the libretto will stand very well on its own without music or singing.

* Title and author: Gianni Schicchi [“Johnny Skeeky”] by Gioachino Forzano, translated by Edoado Petri [Note: Puccinni set this to music as the last of a trio of one-act operas. The other two are dark and tragic - this one is a comic farce.]
* PD text link: http://archive.org/details/iltabarrocloaksu00pucc
* Link to author on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovacchino_Forzano
* Link to title on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gianni_Schicchi
* Number of roles (including narrator) this project will have: 16 (see characters below)
* Original publication date: 1918

GIANNI SCHICCHI ("Johnny Skeeky")
LAURETTA
ZITA, called "The Old Woman," a cousin to Buoso
RINUCCIO, Zita's nephew
GHERARDO, Buoso's nephew
NELLA, his wife
GHERARDINO, their son
BETTO of Signa, a cousin to Buoso, - poor and shabbily clothed, age unguessable.
SIMONE, a cousin to Buoso
MARCO, his son
LA CIESCA, Marco's wife
MASTER SPINELLOCCIO, physician
AMANTIO DI NICOLAO, notary
PINELLINO, shoemaker
GUCCIO, a dyer
Narrator

Please oh please oh please leave plenty of room between lines in the files cuz some lines will be spoken together by multiple people and I'll have to match them up through the wonder of Audacity. And NO singing!

If anyone wants to PL parts and/or the final assembled play I'll be glad to return the favor now or in some future life!

Thanks, Todd

(Have I mentioned how much I thank you for doing this collection? I'll post the second one later.)
