In Harmony with Nature by Matthew Arnold (1822 - 1888) .

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/in-harmony-with-nature-by-matthew-arnold/
Matthew Arnold was a British poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the famed headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to both Tom Arnold, literary professor, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator. Matthew Arnold has been characterized as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues.
Arnold is sometimes called the third great Victorian poet, along with Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning (Summary from Wikipedia)

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
(Please leave no more than 0.5-1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!)
In Harmony with Nature by Matthew Arnold , read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
"In harmony with Nature?" Restless fool,
Who with such heat dost preach what were to thee,
When true, the last impossibility—
To be like Nature strong, like Nature cool!

Know, man hath all which Nature hath, but more,
And in that more lie all his hopes of good.
Nature is cruel, man is sick of blood;
Nature is stubborn, man would fain adore;

Nature is fickle, man hath need of rest;
Nature forgives no debt, and fears no grave;
Man would be mild, and with safe conscience blest.

Man must begin, know this, where Nature ends;
Nature and man can never be fast friends.
Fool, if thou canst not pass her, rest her slave!
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

Matthew Arnold was born on Christmas Eve, 1822. This gifted poet, essayist, critic, and lecturer was a Christmas gift to his parents--precocious, I am sure, but probably not as much as the erroneous date would indicate. :)

Dinna hang thy head, dear David; if thou makest no mistake worse than this, thy spotless character shall remain e'er unstained, and all shall name thee blessed.

"Nature, red in tooth and claw," wrote Tennyson, and Arnold seems to agree with him. But I can't say that I agree with Arnold that man is so much better: adoring, mild, conscientious. Doesn't he elsewhere call the world "a darkling plain / Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, / Where ignorant armies clash by night"? At worst nature is amoral, whereas human cruelties are deliberate and malevolent.

Actually, I don't mean to sound so harsh. I agree that there are tremendous capacities for good in human beings, and maybe we are slowly becoming civilized. I just hope that we last long enough to complete the process.

Sounds as though dear Matthew fell into a bed of nettles at age 6 (!) and never forgave dear Mother Nature!!
