Wonderfull librivox-book. So many voices!

But please take care of your volumes. Serious.
This book seriously needs to be euqalized in loudness, before it goes public. This is dangerous!

Alice has a gain range of 72 db to 97 db!

Oops. Sorry. Breakdown in process, I guess.

The test listeners didn't mention that and I listened to the files piecemeal as they came in. And on top of that, the validator was broken when I uploaded the files. So they went up without that automated check.

I don't know how to fix the files now that they are up on archive.org, but I will try to find out if it is possible.

Hey folks, so i just went thru and listened to samples of alice, and I must say: congrats to you all for rendering this book with such gusto. a perfect example of librivoxity, if ever i did hear it. LC would be proud as punch.

re: the volumes. OK there is some variation, and if we can fix it in future, OK, but the variation was not SO terrible: I listened to the segments on my headphones, and tapped the volume button twice to go up twice to go down, and it seemed fine to me. that is, given the beautiful rendition of the reading, i think this volume variation is totally within range of acceptable for me (i am biased of course!).

now if we can get them closer, ok, but don't sweat it, you guys all did great work here.

Hugh, maybe you meant to sooth my un-nice sounding post, but the loudness differences are not good for the ears, imho, and i really really would like to see them fixed.

72 is the lowest i EVER encountered in ANY mp3-file
97 is the highest i EVER encountered in ANY mp3-file
and this in one book! I was struck by this, i became hectic, chafed, psyhced (whats the right word for it) hence the drastic post. Sorry.
Of course its not urgent.

Oh, I knew what you meant Stephan. But I also couldn't help but chuckle over the fact that the only way you would damage your hearing or disturb the neighbors at a 25db bump was if you were listening at unbelievable, overpressure-wave-causing volume in the first place.

Since you mentioned it, I realized that you probably WERE listening to it that loud - and it made me smile in rememberance...

I will go out on a limb here and suggest you haven't listened to as many librivox mp3s as I have ...

anyway, it sounded fine to me.

and just so everyone knows my opinion, stephan is currently one of the most enthusiastic librivox volunteers--in fact he should be studying for his diploma instead of reading this right now!--and he is VERY passionate about this project. He is also, occasionally, what we like to call in English: painfully honest. blunt. indelicate. that's partly language, and partly enthusiasm. but it's not negative! ... so chuckle when you see stephan's posts, and if you think it's warrented, post: "stephan, that was too blunt." you're likely to get a long apology and explanation almost immediately.

I loved all the voices in this project and probably wouldn't have put the time into checking into this book without this vibrivox version of it. Great project and well done by all. What people can do really amazes me from time to time. This reminds me of how beautiful the world can be.
