Seems to match perfectly with the text as given in the introduction (excepting the extra lines in the sung version). I did notice you had:

And hark the music, mariners!

for

But hark the music, mariners!

But whether that matters -- and maybe the text for the sung version has "And" anyway.

I suppose the poet's name wasn't pronounced right. Are poet's names, being outside the poem/song itself, an issue?

His surname would be said Cunning'am, with the "a" pronounced as a neutral vowel (i.e., like the one at the end of the word "china"). In IPA --

Here is a partly sung and partly spoken version from a salty old tar. [Well, not really, but I can pretend.]

If you would like to hear a really good musical performance of this, here is a link:

And now leave it to me, of course, to throw in a bit of controversy about words. I just could not arrive at even the foggiest concept of what a "snoring" breeze could be like, so I decided to do a little research to see if I could find a different authentic text, and lo and behold! here is what I found: There is a 4-volume publication printed in London in 1825 called The Songs of Scotland, Ancient and Modern, which includes this song, with the words "But give to me the swelling breeze"! And the editor of that anthology was none other than Allan Cunningham himself.
http://books.google.com/books?id=RmRLAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA208&lpg=PA208&dq=wet+sheet+and+a+flowing+sea+original+lyrics&source=bl&ots=kVB3ZbjRmy&sig=kNo3P28ku4buUrPAi7Je4zhOzo0&hl=en&sa=X&ei=oOdXT7i0N6-L0QGk_8m4Dw&sqi=2&ved=0CFsQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q&f=false
I found other old sources with the same word used. "Snoring" somehow got in there a little later. Some more recent arrangements of the song use "roaring" instead of either "swelling" or "snoring." Anything is better than "snoring," in my opinion.

Good singing Herman and Liberty

Here is my reading...

note: Len`s version and notes arrived as I was composing this post, I had changed 'snoring' to 'roaring' as in the song, it makes more sense :)

Hello Liberty,
I made the corrections to my file as you asked me and send it back ( 2min12)
Then I recorded the song singing along with you and merged the two files in a file “chorus”. 2min24sec
But if this does not sound as you like, I send also the recording of my singing along with you. (file called hrforchorus)2min2sec. Perhaps you will have a to synchronise some details and have to adjust the level of my recording.
For the rest of the week I will not be here so, I will listen all this next week.
Best regards
Herman

Mike - Thanks for the very thorough PL! My apologies to Mr. Cunningham. I think I will choose to leave it and blame it on my American accent. Will you be gracing us with a performance as well?

Ginger - Lovely reading, thank you! PL-OK!

Len - How fabulous! PL-OK! Thanks for the great recording! And for your research! I'll make a note of it in the OP for future readers. I agree that a snoring breeze is indeed a silly concept. I suppose I thought it must be the sawing-logs kind of snoring? Maybe that's just as exciting as a roaring breeze? Maybe not. Ah well. Thanks anyway! We should start running our selections by you before we begin recording for the week! (Or I could start doing better research?)

David - Great recording, thank you! PL-OK!

Ruth - Wonderful song! Thank you! You have a very sweet singing voice. PL-OK!

Herman - Thanks so much! I appreciate your work on putting us together! I selfishly would like to have a verse or two to myself, so I'm glad you included your solo file as well. I'll fiddle around with it and get it uploaded later today.

Anyone else want to join our crew, just let me know. You can sing along to my version or the one Herman just posted.

Edit: All of the sung files are a touch on the loud side (93.5, 94.4), and I can't remember what the rule is for the max volume. I know it's 89dB +/- some number... was it 4?

And, lest anyone feel left out after my previous response to Herman's song, cheers for all! Image

Len/Liberty:
The Oxford English Dictionary wrote:Snore
b. Sc., north. dial. and U.S. Of things, wind, etc.: To make or give out a roaring or droning noise.

Example: 1886 Bp. W. Alexander St. Augustine's Holiday 135 The wind‥Humming and snoring thro' rigging and spar.
I have learned not to be surprised by unfamiliar Scots words. English is indeed a rich and wonderful language in all its forms.

Good morning. Here's my wet sheet and flowing sea offering for today. Nice fun piece to read ! I did add some amplification to this, Hope it sounds ok. Feedback is always welcome and appreciated at this end. nbvoices :)

duration: 1:26.0 (Question on this, how to do you measure duration? is it from beginning of opening silence to end of 5 sec silence at end, or just the piece itself? This time is from beginning of front silence to end of closing quote, not end of 5 sec silence. Please advise. Thanks.)

Hi,

Haven't been here for a while, and I hope I didn't forget how to do this and mess it up. http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/dl/wetsheetflowingsea_cunningham_mv.mp3 1:18

Nancy - Fabulous reading! Thanks! You have a very pleasant voice, I enjoyed listening to your recording. We count file duration as the entire file, front to back. AND You are PL-OK!

Tamanna - Welcome to LibriVox! I hope you stick around for a while! Great first recording! There were a few minor problems you'll need to keep in mind in the future. We usually keep 5 seconds of silence at the end of our recordings for technical reasons. Your filename for this project only needs to include your initials, and your id3 tags should be capitalized. Some people just copy and paste them in straight from the first post. I was able to correct these small problems and reupload for you at http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/dl/wetsheetflowingsea_cunningham_t.mp3, so you are PL-OK! Now I just need to know what name you'd like to be listed under. It can be your forum name, your real name or something else entirely. Just let me know and I'll set up your own LibriVox Catalog page with it.

Mike - Welcome back! Great reading, I love your vocal quality. Your recording was a bit too loud, so I de-amplified it a bit. You also had Allan Cunningham listed as the band, not the artist in your id3 tags, so I fixed that while I was at it. I also think I heard 'snorting breeze'? At this point I'm not even worried about it. Thanks! PL-OK!

Lucy - Very nicely done! Thank you! You are perfectly PL-OK!

David - Thank you! I very much appreciate the extra wiggle room.

I also reuploaded my own recording with Harold - I think we'd make a pretty good two-man sailing crew. :)
