It's awesome that we've released so many!
But I don't think we're going to get to 1095, which is what I was hoping for as it would mean we were releasing 3 books a day. I suppose that's a target for next year (or rather 1098, as it's a leap year.)

Do you have any data on how many of these books were in languages other than English, and what the year-to-year trend is for such books? Any new languages in the catalogue? It would be interesting to see if LV is really becoming more and more multilingual.

At the end of last year:

Number of completed non-English projects 624
Total number of languages 32

Now:

Number of completed non-English projects 757
Total number of languages 33

So +1 language and +133 non-English books in the year.

At the end of 2010, non-English books accounted for 15.25% of all completed books. At today's date, they accounted for 14.61%.

Can't tell year-to-year, unless someone saved the stats from last year and right at the new year this year (Edit: which Ruthie seems to have found). Here are the overall stats:

Although (I discovered this when doing research for the 5th anniversary podcast) there are way more than 33 languages featuring in some form in our catalogue. The UN Declaration of human rights has been read in a huge number of languages (I think I counted over 50, but I don't remember the exact figure.) All of these readings are part of one or two large multilingual projects, so aren't featured in the count, as this count only includes entire projects in a single language.
Also I asked for a list of the 33 and found it includes Chinese, Chinese (Mandarin) and Mandarin Chinese, due to different people entering the language in different ways. So it's not a particularly reliable indicator of anything...
But yes, more languages is always a good thing.

Yes, I read about many languages not being specified in the Catalogue. It's a pity we can't be sure about the exact number of languages. After all, such information could be used as an incentive for new readers/listerens

I have this list of 68 languages, which have presumably been used in (mostly multilingual) projects, but some of which are clearly not searchable in the catalogue. This needs to be put right, and is on my little list for when the software is sorted out.

Thanks for that list Ruth. However, while it looks awesome, some details make me think that it's not entirely reliable. Among others, it mentions:

Mayan languages
Multilingual
North American Indian

These inaccuracies, though, don't change the fact that the list is impressively long

I wonder what happened to all those volunteers who recorded stuff in more exotic languages...
