For the Staff Picks in 2012, I would like to take a virtual Librivox World Tour, focusing on literature and books from each of the continents for one month.

The schedule is as follows:

1. Europe staff picks page here: http://librivox.org/2012/01/31/librivox-world-tour-2012-europe/
2. Asia staff picks here: http://librivox.org/2012/03/31/librivox-world-tour-2012-asia/
3. Australia/Oceania http://librivox.org/2012/05/31/librivox-world-tour-2012-australia-oceania/
4. North America staff picks here: http://librivox.org/2012/07/31/librivox-world-tour-2012-north-and-central-america/
5. South America (including Antarctica) staff picks here: http://librivox.org/2012/08/31/librivox-world-tour-2012-south-america/
6. Africa staff picks page here: http://librivox.org/2012/11/01/librivox-world-tour-2012-africa/

So, if you were planning to read solo or set up as a group the most famous novel of Guatemala, or poetry from New Zealand, or a story set in Algiers; if you wanted to read one of the books we already have in its mother tongue or in English... feel free to push it up your list a little so we have lots of books to choose from! All genres are welcome!

This is just a general call for readings, I will post a specific call for book suggestions in the staff picks thread as usual.

Thanks! :D
Cheers, Ava.

Would you like to help with our World Tour? Not up for a solo, not enough time or inspiration?
Here is a list of group recordings that would be fitting for our World Tour:

Fiction:

Non-Fiction:

Edited by Availle: As the Tour is over, and many of the books on this list already complete, I have deleted them from this post.
Cheers, Ava.

I agree :D But seeing the way it's going, you might want to put Europe last...

The mysteries of Paris is also a great read, no claims right now. I'm soloing it in French but I don't know if I'll be ready.

It's great that you all like the idea! :D

I think it will be relatively easy to fill the three non-fiction spots for each continent, but the others... :?:

Admittedly, I did not search in depth yet, but as far as gloriana knows, we don't have any drama with setting/author/main character from either Australia or South America in the catalog. And we can just wing it for Africa and Asia, thanks to Shakespeare and Marlowe...

This is why I did the timing as described in the OT, so that we have more time to fill the gaps.

At a pinch you could use Jules Verne "In search of the castaways" for fiction for one of the trouble spots - he covers the southern hemisphere :D .

I think the frozen pirate happens in the Southern hemisphere too but I'll have to check...
As for drama :hmm:

Well, we have two dramas by Brazilian authors in the catalog:

http://librivox.org/amor-por-anexins-by-artur-de-azevedo/
http://librivox.org/desencantos-by-machado-de-assis/

Both are very short, and all we'd need is an English translation of them... (or any other dramas by those two, perhaps?)

Non-fiction for Asia: East by West Vol. 2 by Henry Lucy should be finished by the end of the year. Starts in Japan, goes on to India and Ceylon, and then home through the Suez Canal.

It'd be good to cross languages as much as possible too -- not that I want to increase anyone's workload, but just to say that mother-tongue readings are a great choice for any part of the world!

(But it would be so cool to hear African texts in Japanese, European ones in Brazilian Portuguese, Australian ones in German and so on...)
There's honestly no such thing as a stupid question -- but I'm afraid I can't rule out giving a stupid answer : : To Posterity and Beyond!

We are almost done with a translation in Portuguese of a book by Dostoievski: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=25538 :)

Ooh Ava, this sounds so exciting. Are you looking for new books to be read for your tour, or are ones already in the catalogue acceptable. I recently read a South African classic - Story of an African Farm. Would that be eligible?
And then there is Jock of the Bushveld, also a classic story of the South African bush in the 19th century. Quite a buzz at the moment with the release of the animated movie!
