I think there's a difference between knowing on an intellectual level what public domain means, and being faced with the practical implications of it.

I regard reading for Librivox in much the same way as taking part in sport or any public activity. I do it because I enjoy it. I'm not ashamed of it. If someone else sees it that's fine. If they take pleasure from it that's even better. If they can find a way of turning an honest penny from it then the thought of that will keep me warm all day.

I wonder if it's just that some people don't know the entire meaning or implications of "public domain." We emphasize that the material must be published before 1923, that the work is out of copyright. Perhaps people figure that's it, that once their recordings are out there, they're not going to be changed altered tweaked or sold for profit.
