COMPLETE: Shakespeare and Music by Christopher Wilson - ek
PL update - Sections 12 and 14
Bothe readings were word perfect but a few pronunciations were not quite correct.
King Lear - section 12
At 1:42
Some years afterwards Berlioz was invited to conduct a {51} concert of his works at Löwenberg for the Prince of Hohenzollern-Hechingen.
The “ö” in Löwenberg should be pronounced to rhyme with the vowel sound in the English word “birth.”
Hechingen should be pronounced “heck-ing-en” ie,. the final syllable is “en” not “gen.”
At 2:17
A beautiful cantabile theme soon appears on the oboe,
The accent in “cantabile” should fall on the second syllable, and the “a” should sound as the “a’ in the English word “”barge”.
At 2:56
It was first produced at Donaueschingen in 1819.
Donaueschingen is actually comprised of two separate words and should be pronounced as follows: “Don-ow (as is “cow”). Esch-ing-en. The accent in “Esch-ing-en” should fall on the first syllable.
Measure for meaure - Section 14
At 3:30
Herr Bethmann
“Bethmann” is pronounced “Bett-mann.”
At 7:45
founded on motives from the opera, by Geo. Kirchner.
“Kirschner” should be pronounced “keersh-ner”
At 9:55
Born at Zelle, Hanover
Zelle is pronounced "Zel-le”

This has been corrected and reuploaded. The others I'm leaving alone on the grounds that, as I don't speak a single word of German, there's no guarantee that my second attempt would be any more accurate than the first.Algy Pug wrote: At 2:17

Hey everyone... I'm still alive, just buried in end-of-the-school-year concerts and events. Once things calm down in a week or so, I'll be able to get my sections completed.
Thanks for your patience!

Only the dark, dark night shows to my eyes the stars;
After the clangor of organ majestic, or chorus, or perfect band,
Silent, athwart my soul, moves the symphony true."

And I'm still alive, having recorded half the "Macbeth" chapter (I stopped and saved the file before the section on Ernest Bloch, whom I constantly confuse with the Marxist philosopher with nearly the same name). Luckily, both the chapters on Merry Wives and Othello are much shorter. I will get through the second half later this evening and have the other two chapters up shortly, I hope.

Have you seen Akira Kurosawa's 'Macbeth', or as he calls it 'Throne of Blood'? Not only is this a great Shakespeare adaptation it is also an extremely fine film in its own right.gloriana wrote:Sure - thanks, Nullifidian and Matthew! And thanks for the video clips, Nullifidian - I've seen Falstaff live but it's been a while. And I've also seen Zeffirelli's Otello, but never the Macbeth opera.

Yep, I've seen "Throne of Blood" several times - it's fantastic. Kurosawa also directed an adaptation of "King Lear" called "Ran," which is brilliant. I recently saw a film of his called "The Bad Sleep Well" which has certain ties to "Hamlet." All very interesting.

I think you should orphan my sections. I'm just not cut out for reading for LibriVox.
I'm sorry to hear that, Nullifidian. I thought you did a very nice job with Johnny-the-priest in Anna Christie. But will respect your wishes if you insist...Nullifidian wrote:I think you should orphan my sections. I'm just not cut out for reading for LibriVox.
Section 5 is PL OK! Nicely read, Alan! I'm looking forward to your next one.
