Readers where PD is death+ 70 years please check date of death of author in notes field before claiming
The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes was a British TV series from the early 70s that dramatized stories written contemporaneously with the Sherlock Holmes stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This anthology contains twelve of the thirteen stories adapted as episodes for the first season. Sadly, one story, "The Missing Witness Sensation" by Ernest Bramah, is not public domain in the U.S., but can be read in the anthology Max Carrados Mysteries. To compensate, I have selected another Max Carrados story that is in the U.S. public domain. (Summary by Nullifidian)
How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in[ this; we’re all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is 01 December 2011.
Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: Standard MAGIC WINDOW:
DURING recording: Please leave no more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording: Start of recording (Intro)

If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name]"
Say: "The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, Vol. 1. [Section title] by [Section author's name], ["Part" then part number, if applicable]."
End of recording
At the end of the section, say:
“End of [Section title] by [Section author], ["Part" then part number, if applicable]."
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
At the end of the book, say (in addition): "End of The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, Vol. 1."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
AFTER recording: Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

David Richardson has already expressed some interest in this project. Sadly, the rules of copyright limit him (and indeed all our British members ) from reading almost all the stories but two, and I'd like to give him the first shot at either "The Horse of the Invisible" or "The Duchess of Wiltshire's Diamonds".
Your window is there - I am assuming so of the stories need to be split
You need to specify what type of proof listening
I'll check out a bit more when you have your MW set up - we need to make sure the Title field is right for it all to work as well as a few other bits of fiddling . Short Story collections normally only have 1 part readings but I think we can to have them individually searched for still
Not that it really matters, Nullifidian, but I am finishing up a solo of Lady Molly of Scotland Yard (which contains The Woman in the Big Hat) and I am planning to record all six of the Madame Sara stories as my next solo. Just thought you might like to know that these two stories will therefore also be in the catalog as part of their original collections.

We will need to make it clear for each story when the Author died so people are aware when picking them - any ideas ?
Anne
I just put the authors with their birth and death dates in the Notes section.

Superb! I look forward to it!
Still, I like the idea of this anthology. Not only does it introduce some writers not in LV, but it also introduces a largely unknown but excellent TV series.
Something I forgot to check with you - I see you have called it volume 1 - how many volumes to you imagine - if it is possible to become more than 9 we should call it 01.

"The Horse of the Invisible" please - Parts one and two. It's either that or fly out to The States and do a dreadfully bad American accent!

Well, that's an idea, but I was thinking of it in terms of the show. The show only had two seasons, and I was hoping to do both of them. After that, I think any further "rivals" could just be anthologized in the short mystery collections, or recorded separately (I am intrigued by the one Max Carrados book from 1914 that we can do, for example).

The American accent wouldn't be necessary, but flying to the States (or Canada, Australia, New Zealand or some other Life + 50 country) would be required.
Maybe you should consider a LibriVox vacation in Aruba?
I'll put you down for "The Horse of the Invisible".
