Les Mystères de Paris (original French title) was originally published in a newspaper day by day.
It's about a German Nobleman who searches his lost daughter among the poor, the thieves and murderers of Paris in the first half of the 19th century.

(just found proof that this translation was printed before 1923: http://www.worldcat.org/title/geheimnisse-von-paris-sitten-roman-mit-portr/oclc/601435293&referer=brief_results )
There was French and German TV show about the book in the late 1970the or early 1980the.
I'm just reading the German translation and I'm thrilled. Would be a great project in either language.

I agree I've added your suggestion to the French Wiki list.
Volumes 1 to 6 are available on PG now. I think I will set up volume 1 in English, but I don't want to be stepping on your toes, HP?
