Hebrew Bible 02 - The Book of Exodus.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/bible-hebrew-02-the-book-of-exodus-by-hebrew-bible/
Exodus (Greek ἔξοδος exodos "departure, expedition, procession") is the second book of the Hebrew Bible, and the second of five books of the Torah (the Pentateuch).

The book narrates the Exodus of the children of Israel out of Egypt: Moses leads them through the wilderness to Mount Sinai. There the God of Israel, through Moses, gives the Hebrews their laws and enters into a covenant with them, by which he will give them the land of Canaan (the "Promised Land") in return for their faithfulness. The book ends with the construction of the Tabernacle.

In Hebrew the book is called Šemot שמות "names", from the incipit, in line with the other four books of the Torah. The Greek name originates with the Septuagint translation of the 3rd century BCE, and has continued to be used in all subsequent Latin and English translations of the book.

Should we specify how we should all read the tetragrammaton, or let the reader decide?

Welcome!

I would prefer to read adonai for JHWH, but elohim if it stands directly with adonai.

And I might say that the linked text is exactly the text of the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS), which should be available in any bookshop, if one prefers to read from a book.

I'll send the partition of the chapters tomorrow.

I could certainly help with the PLing, then we would just need someone to check the sections that I read.

Great, you can sign me up for section one. (I'll start with just one for now, until I know how long the work flow will take me in a second language.)

I'll do section 2, but I have 2 conditions:
One: I be allowed to read in the Ashkenazic pronounciation.
Two: Im having trouble reading the text in the link, so could I read from a book (Masoretic Text, of course)?

Welcome nzk10 !

Any pronuciation is ok, but it should be consistent in itself. We have no examples yet, but I think the pronunciation of sonneteer and me will be quite near to the usage of the synagogues, which is probably more ashkenazic than sefardic. So don't preoccupy!

According to the text, any normal masoretic edition should be ok. The differences in the editions are mainly in the apparatus, there will be not more than 2-3 changes in the whole text. Hope that the scholars at librivox will not critisize me tot harshly for that, but in my opinion the main merit of the BHS-edition is the masorah parva at the margin, but this will be of no importance for reading.

So looking forward for Your recording!

Section 01 is up!
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/n19/exodus_01_hebrewbible.mp3 (07:56)

There are a couple of noticeable punch in points, hopefully that's not too detrimental.

You can put me down for section 3.

Could Sonneteer and nzk10 please post updates on their progress? This is a cleaning month, so please try to complete as many sections as you can this month so we can complete this project in the near future.

Best wishes,
Nicholas J. Bridgewater
