All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/helsinkiin-by-juhani-aho/

I will try and submit Helsinkiin by Juhani Aho http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/13580 (in finnish) by May day (in four months). I read the first chapter (here: http://www.tuija.tv/librivox/Helsinkiin-Aho-chapter1.mp3 ) and do realize the time and effort it takes from anyone, and warmly welcome another Finn to join in. In the meantime, I'll figure out how to submit chapter I and proceed to chapter II, if that's ok by you coordinator people?

I recorded the disclaimer text in english. If you want to, I can change it into Finnish. I think it could be something like this:

"T?m? on Librivox-tallenne. Kaikki librivox-tallenteet ovat julkista omaisuutta (public domain). Lis?tietoja librivoxista ja vapaaehtoiseksi ryhtymisest? librivox piste org."

Welcome Tuija! I'm so excited that we can add Finnish to our list of languages recorded at Librivox! I've noticed that Project Gutenberg has quite a large number of Finnish texts available too. I will add your project to the Librivox Catalog page right now.

Though, I do not know the Finnish language, where I live many people have Finnish ancestry. This past summer the Finn Grand Festival was held in my town and my knitting group did a knitting/crochet demonstration of Finnish styles... it was so much fun.

This is excellent. I don't think you'll need to re-record the LibriVox disclaimer unless you want to (maybe you can use the Finnish version next time) - I think most Finnish people speak English anyway?

In case anyone else is as ignorant as I was about this author, see here: http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/jaho.htm

Let us know about your progress, Tuija! :)

As for the Librivox introduction... You might want to include it in both languages. I really like how you said "...this reading, in Finnish..." so that any unsuspecting English listener will know what langauge they are hearing.

To submit your chapters: if you can hold on to them all on your own computer or server space, and when you are completed with the project I will collect them all from you and upload them to archive.org and catalog them.

As you complete chapters, you can continue to post links to them here so we can enjoy your progress along with you. (If you do not have the computer space, just let me know, and we'll work something out. )

Though I do not understand the words, your voice is really nice and a pleasure to hear. Keep up the great work! =)

Ha, Finn Grand Festival... allright! My insight into festivals in America limit to one Broom Corn Festival in midwest back in 1990.. did not understand much what it was about but the corn dogs were yummy. :)

Roger that, sounds good. Both languages from Chapter 2 on.

Yep, ok, I'm cool with that.

Thanks for the enthusiasm and your encouraging words, Gesine & thistlechick, to get the project rolling, here's chapter two out of six total.

UPDATE Tuesday 3rd: Here are chapters three and four, we're over halfway there!

I realize my original schedule was way too careful - I now expect to finish the book by the end of the week. This is a pretty cool, if not a rather unplanned, way to spend my winter holiday!

UPDATE: Wednesday, 4th:

And just one more to go...

Hello Tuija,
congrats to your finished project!

May i ask you to do a little description of the book?
I need a description of about 2-4 sentences. Your book is next in line to be uploaded to our new host other than archive.org and we need it there. Of course such a summary won?t hurt our own catalogue too.

Examples:

Short Description:
"A Connecticut Yankee.." met with mixed reviews when it was published 1889. The British took offense at the novel,
feeling that it maligned their history and culture. Others hailed it as a triumph, full of genuine insight and
sensitivity to social injustices throughout the ages.

Short Description:
Frankenstein! - First published in London in 1818, it is a Gothic novel infused with the spirit of the Romantic
movement. The story has had an influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror
stories and films

Short Description:
Book 5 of L. Frank Baum's immortal OZ series, in which Dorothy and the Shaggy Man find themselves in Oz, where they
meet Polychrome, Button-Bright, and a host of other fantasy characters on their way to Ozma's lavish birthday party.

Hei Stephan, here's a suggestion:

The miniature novel Helsinkiin by Juhani Aho was published in 1889. A psychological novel about a young man's stepping into adult life, the novel also touches the then heated language politics as Finnish was emerging as a language of academia in the bilingual country. Aho (11.9.1861 - 8.8.1921) was among the first professional writers in Finland.

[Plot in a nutshell: The protagonist, a high school graduate from a small town of Kuopio travels by steamboat and train to Helsinki to start his university studies and eagerly samples the temptations of adult life on his way, before arriving to his destination and disappearing into the Helsinki night.]

Perfect. Thanks.
I am sure, the KaraBetsieAnnie-Monster will come by and grab it for cataloging. :P

You know, i will not be able to do all summaries myself. We gotta make it an automated rule that upon creation, or at the latest on completion, the book leaders do a mini-description of their book.

Cu around.

Okay, I added the description to the catalog page. Stephan, I'll talk to Betsie and Kara about making that a step in the process.
