Spell of the Yukon by Robert Service(1874-1958).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/ottawa-folk-festival-robert-service-collection/

On August 13-15, 2010, A hearty band of Librivox volunteers, led by Bob Ledrew and Sean McGaughey, recorded selections from the Spell of the Yukon by Robert Service with patrons, musicians and organizers of the festival. We chose Robert Service because he is an iconic Canadian poet. It was our intention to record the whole volume, but the festival was disrupted by torrential rains on its final day. For more information on the Ottawa Folk Festival, check out http://www.ottawafolk.org/ . Sean McGaughey also prepared a behind the scenes podcast of this project at http://www.ductapeguy.net/2010/12/for-the-sake-of-the-song-live-from-the-ottawa-folk-festival/

Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

Do you need someone to catalog this for you? I don't recall how our convo went in November. If so, I'll do it for you.

I'd love it if you could catalog it Tricia.

I think I have it just about ready. All the recordings are uploaded. I set up the project with 34 sections because that is how many were in the book. But we only actually recorded 21 because of the rainout. (Including New Year's day which I just recorded cause I never got a chance at the fest). I can't figure out how to add a no user name reader to the catalog.
Anyway, it is ready to go.

Random thots:

Should we include a link in the catalogue page to the Ottawa Folk Festival and the making of... Podcast I did for this project? I can add the links to the summary. I will beef up the summary now.

I have been through all these files several times, but should we ask someone for a quick proof-listen knowing that there is very little that can be fixed knowing the nature of this project?

I think if you've been through the files and are comfortable with them, then you probably don't need a PL.

Might as well get rid of the extra sections, if no one is recording them. We can't catalog blank sections. :)

No user name to the catalog is a tricky one. I'll have to figure that one out! I think I might have an idea (add them in the validator only); I'll have to test it.

I think adding links is a good idea. Either in the summary or in the OtherURL field in the database.

Now that I have all those blank sections, how do I remove them??

What else do you need from me Tricia, before I hand this over to you for cataloguing?

I see there's a 33 and a 33b in the uploader. You did want just the 33, right?

Yes. Just the 33. The 33b is the same recording but the musician who recorded it went back and noodled over top of his reading on guitar.

And just like that...
This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/ottawa-folk-festival-robert-service-collection/

Let me know if it looks OK, Sean.

I've got the validated files backed up here, but you can back them up too, if you like. I'll let you delete the files from your upload folder unless you request that I do it.

Thanks Tricia. I will clean out my directory in the uploader in a day or so.
