All LibriVox Community Podcasts can be found here:
http://www.archive.org/details/librivox_community

While busily avoiding working on the essay I should have been writing today, I got to wondering whether it might be fun to have a regular Librivox community podcast so folk can keep in touch with what's going on and possibly get to view the Librivox community through someone elses eyes.

I'd envisage it as a short recording every week ideally from a different Librivoxer.
I did a little test recording and put it on
yousendit

I'm not sure whether this would be a useful thing or not.

Any comments ?

Personally, I think this is a fantastic idea jimmowatt. Librivox is easily the only forum I've kept involved in since discovering forums, and I'm continually enjoying the exploration of the categories and topics on the site. One problem I have is not keeping up, and a podcast would be an excellent void filler.
Ah, well. That's my two cents worth, as I could go on and on citing the benefits.
I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: 'O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.' And God granted it.

Love it! ... i think those member spotlights should be incorporated with this as "live" interviews (as opposed to dead ones ;) )

That's brilliant, Jim. Great idea, and a great example. (And I'm not just saying that because of the mention of the Tang poems!)

So, how do we make this happen for real?

You've lobbed the ball up in the air so now seems a good time to think out loud and then thrash away trying to hit the thing.
It strikes me that a format similar to first post on reading threads might be good.
e.g
Librivox Community Podcast - volunteers wanted

week1 - sept 10-17 - Jim Mowatt
week2 - sept 17-24 - Earthcalling
week3 - sept 25-2 - awaiting volunteer

(Don't worry, I haven't actually volunteered you there - although of course you can if you wish)

So, we do a first post, see if any volunteers sign up and hopefully it would happen. I'd say no restriction or limitation on length. If you want to to a 2 minute cast or 3 hours then that's fine.
I don't know anything about the mechanics of podcasting (I receive them but have never thought about how I might create one myself) so need to delve into that.
I'd say we need a running theme so keep the jingle or invent a new one if someone has something they think would suit better but whichever try to stick to one.
Somone mentioned putting the weekly 'focus on' interview in here.
There seemed to be a little resistance to making that audio. I think that would have to be the decision of the person doing the interview for that week along with the interviewee. That would be my preferred format for that interview - the interviewer sends list of questions and records them. Interviewee then records answers (wav format) and all is edited together.

I'm surprised there's been such a positive reaction as I'm not sure who this is aimed at. I did it because I particularly enjoyed the New Year Librivox Podcast and the anniversary compilation plus also recognise that communities like to talk about themselves.
Is it the people who don't get in here often but want to keep up with events. Are they the audience?
Or is it the addicts (you know who you are :) ) that can't keep away and want to devour all that is Librivox as much as possible.

Who it is aimed for? I have to admit upon listening i thought: "Nicely told...but i do know all this."
I think it's less aimed at the admins/mods who know what's going on.

Perhaps it's better a platform to inform advanced volunteers or even novices of all the stuff that is going on.
Mods can PERFECTLY USE it to catch up on things if they have been away for a while!!!

I agree
I wonder maybe if we just let it evolve it'll find its own niche and become what folk want as new ideas are fed into it.

I'm happy to oversee it if we get regular volunteers to record it and a mechanism for submitting it to one of the podcast feeds.

I just want 2 names for the next couple of weeks and then I'll set up its own admin thread probably in off topic.

who's an addic?

In the morning the first thing I see is Librivox the last before I go to bed is Librivox.
Mmmm, does this mean I'm an addic?

Likewise, both dit and toe.

My suggestions/agreements would be:-
- Agree with Jim that a different person can take it on each week, bringing their own brand of whateverness to it.
- I'd say the focus should be largely 'external', i.e. stuff that might encourage new listeners and volunteers to get involved:
--- new catalogued recordings (clips?);
--- particular projects worthy of a highlight for whatever reason;
--- news items;
--- 'spotlight'-type interviewettes, perhaps by the person podcasting that week - their own 'why I love LibriVox, how I got here, what I do here' stuff.

Perhaps it was your intention already, but I think this should be a seperate podcast from our usual "chapter-a-week" podcast... subscribing to these two should be seperate from one another...

And... well.... um.... ok.. sign me up... I'm not so confident about doing a unscripted recording, but I would like to give it a try.

Start an LVwiki to keep track perhaps?

Yes, I like this idea - here's some thoughts, both repetitious and new:

- new projects begun this week, in addition to projects recently catalogued

- one or more things from the Suggestions thread - wouldn't YOU like to start a coordinated reading of such-and-such?

- what's being chattered about in the Music thread? The Cooking thread (which hasn't seen much activity in the last couple of months)? The Movies thread? Other 'off-topic' things, e.g. a reminder to CALL YOUR REP to tell them to vote against the evil Internet bill?

- Who's new on the LV forum this week? (e.g. Welcome TechnoWizard - just a username I happen to remember)

And yeah, for those of us who don't podcast, it'd be good to have someone (Stephan? Kara?) set up something where we can 'drop' the completed recording and have it just automatically go out.
