Hi there, ThePoet,

This is an ambitious first post - nothing wrong with that, of course. In case you've not come across it yet, I recommend you read through How to become a book coordinator. It doesn't deal with the speciality of coordinating a dramatic work, which is a fairly new type of venture here. But a good read through the other threads in this forum will do the trick.

If I've understood correctly, you're asking people to audition for all parts? If so, that's going a step or two beyond the normal approach, and it would be worth flagging this up. The norm, in line with the LibriVox ethos, is for people to ask for parts and get them. Auditions are very much the exception; the two or three main roles might be auditioned, the others open. There's an example here http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3040 of two points: a 'special rules' flag in the topic thread, with a note in the first post about 'gender-appropriate casting'; and, further into the thread, a public audition for one part where something special was required and there were two volunteers.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Others are more involved than me in the Dramatic Works side of things, and will no doubt follow with other sugggestions/support. And may of course contradict me - in which case, listen to them!

Thank you for the advice and suggestions. Ambitious? Yes definitely but I am looking forward to the challenge. Anyone can ask to do any part and I look forward to getting many responses and no doubt I will be asking for a lot of advice along the way. I am always open to suggestion and advice.

I really want this to be a tool to help especially young people to become interested in literary classics such as this.

Kind regards

How will the casting of the auditions be done? Will you be deciding, or will it be done as a user's poll?
I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: 'O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.' And God granted it.

As I believe this will be a collective effort and not a dictatorship I will have to lean towards the poll with creative control still reminaing with me However. ... this DOES NOT MEAN I am not open to advice, I am.... I will need all the help I can get.

I want to create something that will be more than just another "audio story " and I firmly believe there are more than enough talented people out there to do just that.

Kind regards

What would you like to see as a sample, Poet - a couple of minutes of reading from R and J? Shorter? Longer?

I would like to hear about 4 minutes of the character that you feel would be most suited to you. You can pick any scene you like for this, as long as you state at the beginning where you are reading from it should be fine.

Kind regards

Just for info, I've submitted 'Romeo and Juliet', an essay by William Hazlitt, to the Short Story Collection:-

Here is my take on Lady Capulet for your consideration.

I would hope to have all the major characters cast by next week Friday 8th September 2006. The minor characters due to the small amount of work invloved can be done later as we progress.

To date opheliad will be Lady Capulet if she decides she wants to do it.

I am eagerly waiting to hear from other people for the remaining parts. I must add that I would prefer gender appropriate voice casting if at all possible.
Kind regards

Personally, I would be quick to cast opheliad as juliet herself.

depending on your timeframe of recording, I would like to tryout for Tybalt.

I am out of country (and recording distance) for the first two weeks of October though and would understand if that is a disqualifying mark in itself.

Actually, ThePoet, were you intending to read for Romeo/Juliet yourself?

Please be sure to use a non-copyright text. Gutenberg is our usual source and they have 4 versions, 2 in copyright (don't use!), 2 free of copyright.

not copyrighted:
http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1513
http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/2261
[oh my, that second one is missing the prologue and uses olde spellings. I b'lieve the first link is the one for you :)]

copyrighted:

When you mention making an audiobook, you mean for LibriVox, yes? Into the public domain and all that. Just wanting to clarify.
