This is an open thread: you can choose *any* public domain poem or poems you wish. This is for those times when you think, "I'd like to record something, but can't manage a whole chapter; a poem or two will do the trick."

We're changing the format for this collection a little; instead of including every poem submitted up to a particular date, we're going to collect twenty poems for each "edition".

You can do a series of poems if you like; there are no restrictions. It doesn't matter at all if someone else has done the same poem. In fact more versions of the same poems are better. If there's a particular poem you love, post it here with a request for more versions of the same.

Bartleby is a great resource for public-domain poetry: http://www.bartleby.com/verse/

For short poems you don't need to do the whole song & dance intro, but it might be nice to say something like: "Jabberwocky, by Lewis Carroll. Read by Jim Pugh for LibriVox DOT org"

128 kbps, two channel recordings

1 Please name your files in lower case, with words separated by underscores: poem_title_author_initials_your_initials.mp3

2 MP3 tags:

Title: Poem Title (e.g. The Raven)
Artist: Author Name (e.g. Robert Frost)
Album: Librivox Short Poetry 002

(Naming the album that way will allow each whole collection to stay together. )

You could put "Recorded by ...." in the Comments section of the MP3 tags.

Then use http://yousendit.com/ to send your poems to:

or post a link on this thread.

Please let me know what's in the file by posting here, too. Make sure you tell me how you want to be named in the listing. If you can let me know which gutenberg text you take your poem from, it would be great! (e.g. A Child's Garden of Verses, gutenberg etext #94)

This evening, as I wait for the ball to drop in the Eastern United States, I recorded two more poems, The Lake Isle of Innisfree, by William Butler Yeats and Loveliest of trees, the cherry now, by A. E. Housman

For the album, I put in the title of the poem. (I hadn't seen the new thread). I've also put in the full standard Librivox heading as opposed to the shortened poetry one.

I tried experimenting with other ways of doing noice reduction, but ended up posting these two without any noice reduction.

Feel free to use as you feel fit. Hopefully over this new year I will manage to post more with more regularity.

Side comment, slightly off topic. Anyone interested in doing a similar collection for children's stories? I'm thinking I may record the Velveteen Rabbit soon.

As long as the file is audible in both ears when heard through headphones, it's fine. If not, that's a problem...

Do we really want them to? At this rate, we'll have hundreds of poems in just a few months. At that point, I'd think it would be better to group them by author, not by which set of 20 each one happened to fall into.

This naming convention is convenient for our cataloging system, which is ornate and, as yet, non-automated (Betsie and I do it all). We need to keep files in groups in order to have them appear together on our archive.org page (archive.org hosts our files) and to be able to make sensible catalog pages:

Trust me, it's just easier this way.

Listeners can, of course, change album id3 tags to author if they choose :)

Just a thought... we could have a total length instead of a total number of poems - for instance, if we took all poems until we reached 70 minutes or so, it would mean each collection would then fit nicely on a CD. I think the first collection happens to be just under 80 minutes total by happy chance...

Wouldn't you like to be able to see the librivox short poetry collections in a nice line of CDs?

I suppose, in time ... especially as the number of Librivox readers increase ... poems will simply be accumulated somewhere and, periodically, a selection from the pool would be produced - brought together by theme, author or some other way. With (at my last check) approaching 400 readers, we'll probably have to set this up some time soon.

I was wondering how long it would take us to get to 20 poems, as we're almost at 10 already!

Well Ive been reading this forum ever since I got my Ipod. Finally got up the courage to record something.

From Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey. The short excerpt that people use, not the whole poem. Got it off the bartelby website. Figured I'd start out with something really small. I'm still messing around with audacity trying to figure out the whole noise reduction thing. So this version still has some of that annoying breathing. Ill try to work on that heh.
