I heard about this site from digg.com. As a ardent supporter (and consumer) of the gutenberg project, I find librivox very exciting.

Loved the Night Before Christmas read by Gace and Brad Bush.

I think I will pick a couple of chapters from the "The Princess of Mars" and "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" as a start. But first I need to get myself a USB mic.

I was wondering if anyone knew any description of who downloads and listens to librivox recordings. These recordings may be particularly useful of some elderly people or visually impaired individuals. But was wondering who uses these recordings as bedtime stories for their children or listen to a book while doing manual work (I knew a bicycle mechanic who listened to books on tape while working).

My ten-year-old son is an audiobook addict -- he started with home-made cassette tapes, then homemade cds, and now has an ipod of his very own filled with audiobook mp3s. He listens while playing, and he listens while going to sleep at night, and he listens on car trips, and he listens in the grocery store. He's got an amazing vocabulary ;-)

I like to listen to audiobooks while knitting and sewing, and while waiting around during karate classes, etc.

Glad to know that there are projects that you'd like to help with (we're always trying to have a wide variety of genres available in the Readers Wanted section).

As for the typical Librivox listener... I'm not sure if we have any actual statistics on this, but I imagine that there is a wide range of walks-of-life plugged into us. I know that where I live the elderly are most likely not to have the computer equipment to enjoy our recordings. Michigan also provides audiobooks to anyone with visual or physical impairments (as well as to those with reading disabilities, etc.) free of charge through a federal service. Therefore they are not as in need of Librivox.

But I'm sure that other parts of the country/world there are many other situations and types of people enjoying our recordings.
