I'm using a cyber-acoustics AC-634 Noise cancelling headset. I think I got 2 on sale at a Staples grand opening for $14. I have had good luck with it. I record into an iriver ifp-780 so I get a very clean, quiet recording.

Here's my newbie entry for Weekly Poetry. I uploaded it to CloudMountain's FTP server, but here's a copy in a temp folder where I work, just in case. I'll leave it there for about a week.

Whooops! Somehow you snuck in there John, didn't see you. Thanks for the contribution. Did you notice that the recording clips off the beginning of a number of your words throughout the recording? Do you have a gate/limiter set for recording? If so, maybe it's set too high. Or do you have a direct line-in mike? Maybe the connection's getting loose, which can happen over time. Dunno. Just trying to be helpful.

Thanks again for sending this! And thanks for the good words re the concept. I once thought I'd create torturous Special Rules: "All readers must memorize the poem first and then record the poem from memory." Now that would be a collection of VERY few readings! (If any.) ?Alan

I haven't listened to the recording at all after doing it - just converted to mp3 and uploaded.

I use a USB mic and don't have a history of issues with it. I'll give it a listen and find out what the story is.

I just listened and didn't hear the problems Alan had mentioned. It sounded fine to me.

Just so I don't feel I'm going nuts here, let me say that I didn't say it didn't sound good, I just hear little gaps. So I listed to the reading on three different systems and marked a copy of the poem as I heard the little gaps, almost skips. Each listening was the same. These are the places, small though they be, marked in light red. It's more me being inquisitive than anything else. As subtle as the color change is below, so the sound. No problem.

If when my wife is sleeping
and the baby and Kathleen
are sleeping
and the sun is a flame-white disc
in silken mists
above shining trees,?
if I in my north room
dance naked, grotesquely
before my mirror
waving my shirt round my head
and singing softly to myself:
"I am lonely, lonely.
I was born to be lonely,
I am best so!"
If I admire my arms, my face,
my shoulders, flanks, buttocks
against the yellow drawn shades,?
Who shall say I am not
the happy genius of my household?

Kristin! You're a gem! Please don't question your sanity! Thank you so much for sticking with me on this and following through with me. A lesser human would have dropped out a long time ago. Your persistence got me all the way. I'll explain.

Because of your second, comparative listen, I thought to listen to the same file you did, going to John's post and listening to the piece from there. I compared it to my red marked text. Nada! Clear of interruptions. Here is the link to the file that John gave in the Forum and that you listened to (no need for you to listen again): http://librivox.paintedricecakes.org/weekly/2danse_russe_williams_jag.mp3 It's renumbered to distinguish it from the first file ?the one I've continually refered to.
