Hey there,
While checking on the avilability of some of H.P. Lovecraft's stories, I came across a monumental goof of mine; the list I put under this thread is wrong. The dates for those stories are the date they were written, not published. here's the corrected list, as per this website:
1916, November: The Alchemist (The United Amateur, 16, No. 4)
1917, November: A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson (The United Amateur, 17, No. 2)
1918, June: The Beast in the Cave (The Vagrant, No. 7)
1919, June: Memory (The United Co-operative, 1, No. 2)
1919, October: Beyond the Wall of Sleep (Pine Cones, 1, No. 6)
1919, November: Dagon (The Vagrant, No. 11)
1919, November: The White Ship (The United Amateur, 19, No. 2)
1920, May: The Statement of Randolph Carter (The Vagrant, No. 13)
1920, June: The Doom That Came to Sarnath (The Scot, No. 44)
1920, September: Poetry and the Gods (The United Amateur, 20, No. 1)
1920, November: The Cats of Ulthar (The Tryout, 6, No. 11)
1920, November: Nyarlathotep (The United Amateur, 20, No. 2)
1920, December: Polaris (The Philosopher, 1, No. 1)
1920, December: The Street (The Wolverine, No. 8 )
1921, March: Ex Oblivione (The United Amateur, 20, No. 4)
1921, March: Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family (The Wolverine, No. 9)
1921, April: The Crawling Chaos (The United Co-operative, 1, No. 3)
1921, July: The Terrible Old Man (The Tryout, 7, No. 4)
1919, July” (1921, summer): The Picture in the House (The National Amateur, 41, No. 6)
1921, October: The Tree (The Tryout, 7, No. 7)
1921, November: The Nameless City (The Wolverine, No. 11)
1922, February-July: Herbert West—Reanimator (Home Brew, 1, No. 1-6)
1922, March: The Music of Erich Zann (The National Amateur, 44, No. 4)
1922, March: The Tomb (The Vagrant, No. 14)
1922, May: Celephaïs (The Rainbow, No. 2)
Unfortunately, that cuts the list down considerably.
I'm sorry if that messes things up.

I think you made a mistake; 1923 is over the line, and is in copyright. It's much harder to establish, but much of post-1922 Lovecraft is in the public domain due to non-renewals, which are a pain to check. But if you're just going by publication year, 1923 is out.SmokestackJones wrote:Unfortunately, that cuts the list down considerably.

The following are also in the Public Domain - at least to archive.org's satisfaction.
"The Whisperer In Darkness" http://www.archive.org/details/The_Whisperer_In_Darkness
"This is a computer generated audiobook using text to speech human voice synthesis. As such, the tempo, sound and cadence may not be palatable by all."
"Dreams in the Witch-House"

"Herbert West: Reanimator"

"The Little Glass Bottle"

"Pickmans Model"

Many are already read, but surely might and power of Librivox can replace a computer generated reading.
There's some H. P. Lovecraft poetry that's not listed here, but is available on archive.org. Not a big poetry fan am I, so someone that is can do a little research - if interested.
(Sorry toxiklogic, "The Shadow Out of Time" isn't on archive.org)

Archive.org doesn't apply the same copyright criteria that we do ... there are a number of books there, for instance, which are available because of Canadian copyright law, which I do not think would be recordable by LibriVox.
Nice to know where the texts are for when they do fall out of US copyright, though

There's honestly no such thing as a stupid question -- but I'm afraid I can't rule out giving a stupid answer : : To Posterity and Beyond!

what is the timescale for HP Lovecraft's other works becoming available?
If there any good ones coming up soon, I might start work now!
I'm thinking:
At the Mountains of Madness
The Call of Cthulhu
The Dunwich Horror
The Shadow Over Innsmouth
etc...

Not in my lifetime... The Dunwich Horror and others (which includes The Call of Cthulhu, The Dunwich Horror, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, was published in 1963 and copyright was renewed in 1991. This means that US copyright will expire in 2059.
EDIT: At the Mountains of Madness was evidently published in Astounding Stories, and possibly copyright wasn't renewed, but this always takes a fair amount of digging to find out.

I've just had a look at The Shunned House and would like to take it on. From that quick look, I'm not sure how long it is. I'll have a closer look when I get back from work this evening.

Is "The Whisperer in the Darkness" available then?
It's not in the list - so it's probably not PD - so that would mean you can't record it for LV. That's what the list means.
Quick wikipedia search results in publication date of 1931. Didn't check the copyright renewal stuff.

Doesn't appear so. It first appeared in a Magazine (Weird Tales), so copyright is extra tricky. Gregg Weeks may wish to chime in with more expertise.JamesDarroch wrote:Is "The Whisperer in the Darkness" available then?
There is an audio version at Archive, under a CC license, read by our very own Morgan Scorpion:
