Poem for the week August 13 - 19, 2006.
?Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded
?by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!

????????? This collection is closed. A grand thank you to all 16 contributors!

??William Carlos Williams
????Danse Russe

Special Request ? Please Read[/size]
Williams spent his life as a doctor practicing pediatric medicine in northern New Jersey, a few miles west of New York City. During the work day he often dashed off poems on the backs of blank prescrition pads that he kept in his pocket. This particular poem was writen in just such a spontaneous way, after seeing the Russian Ballet perform in Manhattan. He came home and, well...

Knowing the straightforward, American quality of his poetry, particularly its spontaineous nature, it might be interesting to hear recordings of this poem made in the same way ?in an unrehearsed, unedited cold read. Dash it off (which doesn't mean rush it) just as Williams did time after time on his pads. The experience (and rightly the poem) is brief, so it won't take much. You can do it! Try not to read it at all ????????? ?until you...

"Danse Russe" by William Carlos Williams, read for LibriVox dot org by [your name] and if you wish [your location and personal URL]

Pause 3-4 seconds and do a straight, inspired read-through of the poem:

???? If when my wife is sleeping
???? and the baby and Kathleen
???? are sleeping
???? and the sun is a flame-white disc
???? in silken mists
???? above shining trees,?
???? if I in my north room
???? dance naked, grotesquely
???? before my mirror
???? waving my shirt round my head
???? and singing softly to myself:
???? "I am lonely, lonely.
???? I was born to be lonely,
???? I am best so!"
???? If I admire my arms, my face,
???? my shoulders, flanks, buttocks
???? against the yellow drawn shades,?

???? Who shall say I am not
???? the happy genius of my household?

Wait 3-4 seconds and finish with:

End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

And end with 4-5 seconds of silence.

Yes featherheadfop, I received your contribution on my server fine 'n' dandy.
Good work. Thanks much.

Can a woman be a fop? I think not traditionally ?even with feathers.
But gee, the whole world's continually turned upside down.
Why not even foppery?

Ok, here you go, ice cold. I am unfamiliar with the poem and I didn't even peek before I read it.

Interesting and rather therapeutic as I sometimes will just keep deleting and re-recording. (I really need help with this problem. I would get a lot more done if I could stop deleting things.) :(

You did terrifically! Not ice cold at all. Nice 'n' warm. Good work KH. I especially like the slight tingling sound (earings?) when you mention the trees. Sounded unrehearsed to me! And confidently hesitant. You jumped right in, girl! You MUST do this sort of thing more often! You don't have to delete spontaneity!

Thanks Alan. I'll try to control my deleting.

Ack, cat tags. I missed that when I listened to it. Guess I'm too used to hearing them, they don't register.

Meh. I did it. I'm not very good at spontaneity... or poetry in general... so i take it a spontaneous poem is always good??

Its uploaded by FTP (see? I'm getting good at this whole gadgetey gismo-ey thing?)

Here's another one at http://piratelibrary.com/librivox/danse_russe_williams__cs.mp3

I followed the instructions exactly, and this is why you may catch the spontaneous cat sneezes in the background.

How do we know if our initials are unique ... I've not been here in a while, and you might have had nothing but CS-people signing up in the interim..?
There's honestly no such thing as a stupid question -- but I'm afraid I can't rule out giving a stupid answer : : To Posterity and Beyond!

Here's the link to mine, in Kara's uploader.

Un-"rehearsed" and captured on the first run-through as requested...whether that's a good or bad thing remains to be seen

Still, even to a person like myself who is not especially enamored of poetry in general, how could you not love a poem that talks about dancing naked and "grotesquely" around the room? ;) Haven't we all had those moments?

Ha, I think fops have always been a bit on the feminine side, so for a woman to become a fop doesn't require such a leap of faith. But no, I don't think it's traditionally done ;).

So far...
thanks to the following people:

Cori
Ianna
Kelly
Kristin
Laura
Maddie

Everything is just fine.
Great spontaneity all around!

Thanks to each of you, much, much.
Each is an unique contribution.

Have to comment now (to all at LV) that
it's interesting to see only women contributing
so far. Is this a deep telling of some kind?
Is it a statement about men and spontaneity?
This poem was written by a MAN!
Men are invited to read it as well!

(Just an observation.)

Sorry Cori, forgot to get back to you on this. You're just fine as CS. You're listed as such in the LibriVox Readers and Their Catalog Names. It's all reserved for you. No others. ?Alan
