Christmas is coming!
So warm up those microphones!

:D :) 8)

Starting now until November 1st, I will be collecting Christmas stories and poems for a collection that will be available for holiday listening, or burning onto CDs for gifts. :)

Here are the "rules":

* Any Christmas themed short story, essay, poem, or passage of scripture is welcome, so long as it is previously published and in the public domain. Sorry, no songs! Please see the Christmas song thread for those. :)

* Please note that although the original text of the Bible is in the public domain, the translation from Hebrew or Greek may not be. Please verify that the translation you are using is public domain. If you are unsure, ask and someone will find out for you. Or you can play it safe and stick to the King James version.

* If you want to record something from a non-Christian tradition, please feel free. All traditions are welcome. =) However, I would prefer to have the word 'Christmas' in the title of the collection, as I expect most submissions to be, well, about 'Christmas' rather than about a generic holiday, especially as most works in the public domain pre-date the modern sentiments of multi-cultural inclusion. (If this is a problem for anyone, please pm me and we can talk about it.)

* You do not need to sign up. Multiple versions are welcome!

* If you don't know where to start, look at the thread where the idea started http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=48276

* This may be a popular work for gift giving, so I'd like to keep files short enough to fit onto an audio CD, around 60 minutes. If it's a bit longer, we can split it into two files. If it's a lot longer, it should probably be started as a project in the 'Going Solo' forum. If in doubt, ask! :)

* Please feel free to submit as many files as you like!

Recording Notes:

For stories or long poems:
* Begin your recording with the standard Librivox Disclaimer: "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox Recordings are in the public domain. For more information and to find out how you can volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"
* Say: "[Story Title], by [Author Name]" , read for LibriVox.org by [your name] or some variation on that, adding date, location, your personal url, if you wish.
* At end, say: "End of [Story Title], by [Author Name]"
* Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording

For short poems:
* If you have a short poem, you can use the abbreviated disclaimer instead:
* "[Poem title], by [author], read for LibriVox.org by [your name]" or some variation on that, adding date, location, your personal url, if you wish.

* At the End say: End of poem; this recording is in the public domain.

For all recordings:

* More recording info: http://librivox.org/about-recording/
* Even more recording info: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/NewbieGuideToRecording

Wonderful idea, Tina!

I know we don't need to claim, but I thought I'd flag this one up:

In the Workhouse, Christmas Day - George R Sim

http://monologues.co.uk/Dramatic/Christmas_Day_in_the_Workhouse.htm

To reasons to raise it here: It's not in Gutenberg, and I've not yet found proof that this is the genuine text with genuine dates; also, it's such a part of many families' traditional Christmas (so I understand) that others may want to do it.

It also spawned the likes of: "Twas Christmas Day in the summer, the snow was raining fast. A barefooted boy with shoes on stood sitting on the grass..." (Yes, groan etc.)

**EDIT** Rummage rummage... Library of Congress has a sound recording from 1912... Now, wouldn't that be worth a listen?

Oh Tina, thank for starting this!

I'm so sad that I can't read A Child's Christmas in Wales, though. One Christmas was so like another, in those years around the sea-town corner now... Nor any of the Christmas chapters from the Little House books. Nor part of The Dark is Rising. Grr. Oh well, I'lll just have to find something else. :)

Well, technically,...
No one says that you can't RECORD them, you just can't UPLOAD them ^_-

Well, yes :) We still have the LP somewhere, and a CD. But we also have a little pocket-size edition with luscious woodcuts by Ellen Raskin so it's very fun to read aloud!

Quick question--For short stories, the OP says nothing about "This recording by...." Can we fit such a line in at the top of the recording, if we're doing a short story?

I'd like to contribute a very short story:

"At Christmas Time"
from The Witch and Other Stories, by Anton Chekhov

Will there be a master list on the top post of who is claiming what?

FYI: For this collection I'm putting together a mini-collaborative reading of
The Thin Santa : The Chicken Yard That Was a Christmas Stocking
by Ellis Parker Butler

I've just sent, via YouSendIt, my recording of "Hoodoo McFiggin's Christmas," by Stephen Leacock. It's a humorous story of a young boy who has a rather disappointing Christmas, but who makes the best of things.

Gutenberg link: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/6340/6340.txt
Time: 5:34
Recorded by Dave Ranson

Can we do more than one story? While plowing though Gutenberg the other day, I found a rather nice Russian Christmas folktale. It's in English, and I just might give it a try, if I can.

Or "King John's Christmas"! Which is totally what I'd do if it weren't still under copyright. Blast.

Yeah! More Canadian work. :)

I am doing Stephan Leacock's "Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town" over in readers wanted. I would love to have a few Canadian voices help on this:
