My mother worked Rosauers during that time; they sold out of milk, eggs, beer, and chips the second day. Evidently there were two camps: Stocking up on vitals, or celebrating the end of the world. Mom said someone from Howard Johnson came in and bought a cartload of eggs; they didn't get their shipment so they had to scramble for some eggs. (no pun intended)
Probably everyone around here has a mason jar full of ash in their basement. I've even seen 'em at yard sales. That stuff was murder on cars. Paint jobs, engines, air filters, you name it. People with heart conditions were told to stay off the streets, as were people with seizure disorders. The air was pretty bad; the banks had signs telling people to remove their masks before entering.
It's Mount St Helen's Day!

Mt. St. Helens memories . . . I was living in Illinois at the time & I called my dad on the phone in Seattle to see if he was "ok." He hadn't turned on the TV and didn't know anything had happened. . . My brother in law had a wheat farm near Rosalia,WA. Covered with ash, but the crop came through just fine.

I thought (and Wikipedia agrees) that it was May 18th 1980.
Did the earth move for us? Definitely!
My reason for saying this is, my wife and I married on May 18th 1985 and just this month celebrated our Silver Wedding Anniversary.Wikipedia wrote:Mount St. Helens is most famous for its catastrophic eruption on May 18, 1980,

Beg pardon. I was confused by the time display, I forgot that the USA lives in the past as far as UK is concerned! (at least 5 hours behind) and saw the original post displayed here as 19th.
Apologies all round!
