Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many Librivox volunteers as possible!

This week we're reading "Jazz Fantasia" by Carl Sandburg. This poem is a special challenge because, as you'll find when you read it, it isn't just about jazz, it is jazz. The rhythm is central, but not so clearly defined, so play around and improvise!

Start Recording!

Because we use the abbreviated "librivox disclaimer" for weekly poetry, start by saying the title and author/source. This week, that's:

Then, say the abbreviated disclaimer:

(If desired, add your location, your personal URL, etc.)

Now read the body of the poem:

DRUM on your drums, batter on your banjoes, sob on the long cool winding saxophones. Go to it, O jazzmen.

Sling your knuckles on the bottoms of the happy tin pans, let your trombones ooze, and go hushahusha-hush with the slippery sand-paper.

Moan like an autumn wind high in the lonesome tree-tops, moan soft like you wanted somebody terrible, cry like a racing car slipping away from a motorcycle cop, bang-bang! you jazzmen, bang altogether drums, traps, banjoes, horns, tin cans?make two people fight on the top of a stairway and scratch each other?s eyes in a clinch tumbling down the stairs.

Can the rough stuff ? now a Mississippi steamboat pushes up the night river with a hoo-hoo-hoo-oo ? and the green lanterns calling to the high soft stars ? a red moon rides on the humps of the low river hills ? go to it, O jazzmen.

At the end, say:

End of Poem.
(I personally like to add "This recording is in the public domain.")

Leave 3-5 seconds silent, then stop recording.

After Recording,

Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:

File name ? all in lowercase: jazz_fantasia_sandburg_[your initials in 4 letters or less].mp3

ID-3 tags:
Title: Jazz Fantasia - Read by [your initials]
Artist: Carl Sandburg
Album: LibriVox Weekly Poetry
Genre: Speech
Comments (Optional): Public Domain; read by [your name]

Here you go:

I said "... Sting your knuckles ..." it seemed to make more sense than "sling" , so I wondered if it was a mistake in proof-reading. Tell me if it *really* should be "sling" and I'll do it again. It's fun; takes me back to jazz and folk clubs in Soho of long years ago.

Volume is good! I have a tv and fan on behind me and I didn't have to increase the volume on this from the last one I listened to. (Think it was Peter's)

Got it, Sean! They all sound good.

Peter---I love yours; wouldn't ask you to change a thing. ^_~ Actually I think it's nice with the weekly poems that the pressure is off of any one version to be totally accurate and some variation becomes okay.

(You can tell he's much more jazz-literate than me; both of us took the "somewhere between reciting and singing" tack, but his rhythms are much more jazzy and inventive, I think...)

He's not very computer literate, so don't expect to see him around the forum, but when I visited him and Mom a month or so ago I got him to make a recording, since this is his favorite poem and I knew he had such a great way of performing it (he's a retired English teacher turned Pastor, and I've been hearing him demonstrate with this poem since I was a kid). However, I did do it with my noisy mic just plugged into my iRiver (it's not a bad mic otherwise but it seems to pick up noise really bad...), and listening to it... I decided not to change a thing. It didn't seem quite like Dad anymore if I edited out his taking breaths, and there aren't any stumbles or repeats, so I decided just to go with it.

And yes, it's his birthday this week. ^_~

I'm not as happy as I wanted to be with this. I didn't quite get the mood I was going for, even after 10 tries. This one had the least amount of background noise.

I purposely haven't listened to anyone else's recordings yet because I didn't want any one else's reading to influence my own if that makes sense. It's one of those highly interpretable, stylized poems and I wanted to read it fresh without anyone else's reading already in my head. So now that I have mine recorded, I'm looking forward to listening to the others (especially Laura's dad!).

EDIT: Listened to them all, we've got some great jazzy readers here! Laura - yours made me think instantly of your recording of "The Congo."

And your dad's is just perfect, so authentic and you can just hear his passion for the poem.

Ezwa - your accent sounds especially enchanting on this poem for some reason.
