Short Story Collection Vol. 043

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/short-story-collection-vol-043-by-various/

NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.

This collection is for any short story in the English Language in the public domain, preferably less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute as many as you wish, and there is no need to "sign-up" before recording as long as the work is clearly in the public domain. Please post here if you are unsure about public domain status.

Multiple versions are always welcome, so you can record a story that has been recorded before. (If the same stories are submitted twice in the same collection, we will carry the second version over to the next collection) .

You may prefer to submit your recording to one of the other more specialised short story collections.

After 20 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.

1. RECORD
  • Be sure to set your recording software to: 44100Hz, 16-bit
  • At the BEGINNING Say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox Recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"
  • At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]"
  • If you wish, you may also say: "Read by...your name."
  • Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording or 10 seconds if longer than 30 minutes.
2. EDIT and SAVE your file:
  • Need noise-cleaning?Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear distracting background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The free beta version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Note: Noisecleaning with earlier versions of Audacity (1.2.x) is not recommended.
  • ID3 Tags:
    • • Title/Name: [Title]
      • Artist: [Author Name]
      • Album: LibriVox Short Story Collection Vol. 043
  • Save or export your recording to an mp3 file at 128kpbs using the following filename:
    • File Name: Put file name all in lowercase, and the title all in one word (no leading articles i.e. the, a, an, and NO SPACES): shortstory043_shorttitleinoneword_readersinitials.mp3,
      e.g. shortstory043_scarletletter_ge.mp3
3. SUBMIT your recording:
Please upload your finished recording using the LibriVox uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please copy to post in this thread):
http://upload.librivox.org

If you have trouble reading the image above, please send a private message to any admin
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: rg - RuthieG.
*If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

4. POST the following information in this thread:
  • • The link you copied from the uploader to your file
    • Name of your story
    • Author (birth year - death year)
    • Translator if applicable (birth year - death year)
    • Source from which you read (i.e. Gutenberg etext url)
    • Length in minutes and size in MB of your file
    • If this is your first Librivox recording, I will also need your name as you would like it to appear on the catalogue page and the URL of your homepage if you have one and would like it linked to your name on the catalogue page.

Sorry Ruthie. I just uploaded a short story which I got off of WikiSource, but as I'm putting together the info for you, I find that I'm not satisfied with their proof of PD. There doesn't seem to be a provable source of the translation and the story doesn't appear anywhere else on the Internet.

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/rg/shortstory043_grasshopper_add.mp3

Which is to say, I'm holding off on posting it until I've heard more detained proof from them. Sorry. Should have looked into the before uploading.

Using Wikisource seems to be very doubtful these days. Despite the loud PD disclaimer, that page also has a Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License at the foot.

I have to confess that it looks very unlikely that this translation is in the Public Domain, as the translator was only born in 1903.

EDIT: The Constance Garnett translation is available on Gutenberg, though. Any use? http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1883

Thanks Ruthie. After recording nearly 60 of is stories, you'd think I would have stuck with Garnett. The Garnett translation is almost the same... except... Yikes, the Coulson "translation" is only TWO sections, 1742 words —13 mins. The actual story is EIGHT sections long and 9729 words (an hour and 11 mins! What a ninny. And I have a 1920 copy of the Garnett book right here at my computer. What a noodle I am... !

That's it! I've sworn off Wikisource!

So. Sorry. Please delete my not-a-contribution from the server. Sorry.

This was posted in the Short Mystery Collection a little while ago, but I think it would fit much better here. It's a folklore legend type of thing. Ruth, I've renamed the file and moved it to your MC folder.

Ruthie--

This is not, properly speaking, a reply. It's a query. But I don't see another way of asking the question here. If I'm doing it the wrong way, let me know.

Has my recording of Reginald Blake, Financier and Cad , sent on Feb. 23, been received? And has it been properly done?

With thanks, John

Um... no. You didn't post here, so I didn't know it was there.

Looking in my folder, which has some hundreds of files, I now find it, and your additional information. It would be impossible to deal with all new files in this way.

That is why the top post of every project has clear instructions on what to do. ;) See No. 4 which says:
So I would have expected to see in this thread:

Upload URL: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/rg/shortstory043_reginaldblakefinancierandcad_jd.mp3
Name of story: Reginald Blake, Financier and Cad
Author: Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1920)
Source: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/2234/2234-h/2234-h.htm
Length and size of file: 19:45.0 min. 18.0 mb
Reader's name as he would like it to be listed in the catalogue: John de Forest (Yes, the d is l.c., and there's a space between the de and the Forest.)

I will now add it to the Magic Window. :D

John and Richard, I have added your readings, for which I thank you. :D

I will try and proof-listen in the next day or two, so pop back to make sure no edits are needed. (I love Jerome...)

John: you now have your own catalogue page at http://librivox.org/newcatalog/people_public.php?peopleid=4906 where you can keep track of the sections for which you volunteer. Very handy, it is.
