Social enterprise, is for the greater good. If libravox makes every book, poem and speech available for the blind, that is such a force for good.
But to pinch the recordings for the blind and sell them. Well, I'm left without words to articulate this.
But the blind are unlikely to know about librivox. So they'll be buying audio CDs online, then they'll hear the disclaimer and maybe visit the site and find out about the free works.

As I said that's how I found out about LV and I don't begrudge the £20 or so that I spent on bulk buying before I realised.

Also it is not just the Blind who listen to these recordings, and I don't think that was the original intent of LV either, it's just a very happy side effect.
So little space, so much to say.

Most eBay sellers are legitimately charing for the service of providing recordings in a medium that some people will find convenient. This is fine (in fact, I think it's fair to say we are usually very happy about it), as long as prices are reasonable and there's a reference saying where the recordings have come from.

I think I would feel heavily ripped off to pay $70 (as in case of the Amazon CDs) for something that will have cost only a couple of dollars at most to produce, and which I could have got for free if only the seller had not kept this possibility secret.

And I, on the other hand, am trying to find out if my Grandma has a dvd player that could handle these discs so we can buy a set for her! :)

You could buy a dvd burner for around the same price, I imagine.

Well, the $70 collections are 100 books, so that's less expensive than most of the Ebay listings on a per-book basis. And given the time it would take to download and burn 100 books, it's probably worth it to some people even if they know the source of the recordings. Though I agree that it would be nice if they specified the source in the listings.

And I am for sale on Amazon too. :shock: Same collection as Kara; there's a separate listing for each book, apparently.

Nope. From the wiki:
The LV Wiki wrote:However They Wish?

What does "however they wish" mean, exactly? People may use our recordings to profit; they may remix them into other projects; they do not need to give credit to the individual reader/writer/creator or to LibriVox. Anyone may do all kinds of things with LibriVox recordings. Some we might "approve of," and other things we might prefer them not do - but Public Domain means that just about anyone can do what they like with the recordings. Here are some things that we know people have done with LibriVox recordings:
  • used the LibriVox recordings in YouTube videos
  • remixed LibriVox recordings into music, and sold the recordings
  • remixed LibriVox recordings into music, and gave the recordings away
  • used LibriVox recordings in art installations
  • made CDs of LibriVox books, and sold them on ebay (see here for discussions about LibriVox and Ebay)
  • used LibriVox recordings in non-commercial educational projects
  • used LibriVox recordings in commercial educational projects
Some other examples of things that might happen (but has not, to our knowledge happened):
  • CDs of Romance of Rubber sold as a fundraiser for a charity you don't like;
  • The summary of Frankenstein used to promote a major motion picture;
  • Fables for the Frivolous sampled into a violent rap song;
  • Origin of the Species as background atmosphere for a pornographic film
Although these examples are far-fetched, they are all acceptable uses of public domain materials. So be aware of what you are doing when you free your recordings, text and images into the public domain. You really have to let go!
from the Amazon listing:
"Embedded tag data for an organized display"

I don't suppose we could easter-egg a tag that says 'Hey cheapskate, this is my recording I double-dog dare ya to record for Librivox.org!!:P "

I'm surprised no one from here is 'reviewing' the CDs for Amazon....

Reviewing CDs is a good idea. Maybe you could slyly put into the review that you can download the CDs for free on the website?

Done - not so slyly, I might add. :) The review is being processed, and should be up in 48 hours according to Amazon.

Out of curiousity, I am not sure if it is mentioned anywhere else, do these people selling the librovox recordings remove the librovox public domain and recording message on the beginning or do they leave this present on the recordings?

It depends. I found out about LV through buying cheap audio book CDs online, and hearing the disclaimer on them. So some seller's will just burn the files onto CD and sell them as they are.

However I would think some sellers probably do remove the disclaimer. (Since once I found out about LV, I stopped buying the CDs and started downloading from here.)

It depends on the personal ethics (and laziness I suppose) of the seller.

It's not just laziness or ethics, but taste as well... some listeners prefer not to hear the disclaimer...so some ebayers (or others) will take it out.
